Name

The district is named after a traditional community on the coast called "Lingyaliao" ({{lang|zh-hant|苓雅寮}}; {{zh|p=Língyǎliáo|poj=Lêng-ngá-liâu}}) or {{lang|zh-hant|苓仔寮}} ({{zh|links=no |poj=Lêng-á-liâu}}), after the similar-sounding {{lang|zh-hant|苓仔}} ({{zh|links=no |poj=lêng-á}}), which refers to a place where fishermen would put their nets after use. After 1945, the community was combined with "Guotianzi" ({{lang|zh-hant|過田子}}), "Lingdeguan" ({{lang|zh|林德官}}), and "Wukuaicuo" ({{lang|zh-hant|五塊厝}}) to form "Lienya District" ({{lang|zh-hant|連雅區}}). In 1952 the original name Lingya ({{lang|zh-hant|苓雅}}) was restored.
