In 2020, Yu was one of the researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who received a $500,000 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Observations and Monitoring program to develop a machine learning framework to improve estimates of air-sea heat exchange in the Arctic Ocean.{{Cite web |title=WHOI-NOAA Partnership Tackles Critical Gap In Climate Knowledge |url=https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/whoi-noaa-partnership-tackles-critical-gap-in-climate-knowledge-1029659096 |access-date=2022-09-22 |website=markets.businessinsider.com |language=en}} Yu's research involves analysing data collected by a Saildrone fleet from a 2019 Arctic mission.{{Cite web |title=NASA study finds close correlation between satellite and Saildrone in-situ data |url=https://www.sailworldcruising.com/news/236204/Correlation-between-satellite-and-Saildrone-data |access-date=2022-09-22 |website=www.sailworldcruising.com}}
Yu has authored over 100 academic publications, which have been cited over 7,800 times, resulting in an h-index and i10-index of 37 and 65 respectively.{{Cite web |title=Lisan Yu |url=https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=yaZviHIAAAAJ&hl=en |access-date=2022-09-22 |website=scholar.google.com}} Yu was one of 1,371 peer-reviewers for the JGR-Oceans journal during 2021.{{Cite journal |last1=Beal |first1=Lisa M. |last2=Chambers |first2=Don |last3=Friedrichs |first3=Marjorie A.
