Seinfeld is an American television sitcom created by Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David. Seinfeld has been described by some as a "show about nothing",{{cite journal|doi=10.1177/004057369805500201|title=Editorial: Good-bye Seinfeld|journal=Theology Today|volume=55|issue=2|pages=147–151|last=Miller|first=Patrick D.|date=July 1998|s2cid=171062886}} similar to the self-parodying "show within a show" of fourth-season episode "The Pilot". Jerry Seinfeld is the lead character and played as a fictionalized version of himself. Set predominantly in an apartment block on New York City's Upper West Side, the show features a host of Jerry's friends and acquaintances, which include George Costanza, Elaine Benes, and Cosmo Kramer, who are portrayed by Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Michael Richards, respectively.{{cite news|title=Seinfeld and nihilism |url=http://www.nd.edu/~observer/12031999/News/5.html |date=1999-12-03 |access-date=2007-12-12 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071217191703/http://www.nd.edu/~observer/12031999/News/5.html |archive-date=2007-12-17 }}
The series debuted on July 5, 1989, on NBC, as The Seinfeld Chronicles.{{cite web|url=http://www.sonypictures.com/tv/shows/seinfeld/episode_guide/?sl=episode&ep=101 |title=The Seinfeld Chronicles episode at Seinfeld Official Site |publisher=Sony Pictures |access-date=2008-03-23 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081025011046/http://www.sonypictures.com/tv/shows/seinfeld/episode_guide/?sl=episode&ep=101 |archive-date=2008-10-25 }} The pilot episode was met with poor reviews, and as a result, NBC passed on the show. However, NBC executive Rick Ludwin believed the series had potential and therefore gave Seinfeld a budget to create four more episodes, which formed the rest of season 1 and began airing on May 31, 1990.{{cite web|last=Boudreaux |first=Jonathan |url=http://www.tvdvdreviews.com/seinfeld1.html |title=Seinfeld: Season 1 & 2 DVD Review |publisher=tvdvdreviews.com |date=2004-11-24 |access-date=2008-03-19 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080418075527/http://www.tvdvdreviews.com/seinfeld1.html |archive-date=2008-04-18 }}{{cite web|url=http://www.tvguide.com/detail/tv-show.aspx?tvobjectid=100389&more=ucepisodelist|title=Seinfeld Episodes|publisher=TV Guide|access-date=2008-03-20|archive-date=May 5, 2008|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080505004503/http://www.tvguide.com/detail/tv-show.aspx?tvobjectid=100389&more=ucepisodelist|url-status=live}} The first season is considered the smallest sitcom order in television history.{{cite video|title=Seinfeld Seasons 1 & 2: Notes about Nothing – "The Contest"|medium=DVD|publisher=Sony Pictures Home Entertainment|date=2004-11-23}} During its nine-year run, 180 episodes of Seinfeld were produced. The count includes both halves of three one-hour episodes, including the finale, and two retrospective episodes, each split into two parts: "The Highlights of 100", covering the first 100 episodes; and "The Clip Show", also known as "The Chronicle", which aired before the series finale. On November 25, 2004, a special titled The Seinfeld Story was broadcast. This marked the first appearance of Seinfeld on NBC since its series finale in 1998.{{cite web|url=https://www.today.com/popculture/seinfeld-story-tells-improbable-tale-wbna6567628|title=The Seinfeld Story|access-date=2021-12-10|author=Richmond, Ray|date=2004-11-23|publisher=Today.com|archive-date=March 20, 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220320101926/https://www.today.com/popculture/seinfeld-story-tells-improbable-tale-wbna6567628|url-status=live}} All nine seasons are available on DVD, Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray,{{cite web|url=https://variety.com/2024/shopping/news/seinfeld-blu-ray-4k-uhd-release-buy-online-1236195542/ |title=‘Seinfeld’ Releases on Blu-ray and 4K UHD |publisher=Variety |access-date=2025-01-07 |url-status=live}} and, as of {{CURRENTYEAR}}, the show is still re-run regularly in syndication.{{cite web|url=http://www.sonypictures.com/tv/shows/seinfeld/about/ |title=Seinfeld show description from the Official Site |publisher=Sony Pictures |access-date=2008-03-22 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080403111613/http://www.sonypictures.com/tv/shows/seinfeld/about/ |archive-date=2008-04-03 }} The final episode aired on May 14, 1998.
