The Simpsons is an American animated sitcom created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company. It is a satirical depiction of a dysfunctional middle-class American lifestyle starring the eponymous family: Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. Set in the town of Springfield, the show lampoons both American culture and the human condition.{{cite video |year=2000 |title=The Simpsons: America's First Family |medium=television documentary |publisher=BBC}} Later released on the 2001 DVD The Simpsons – The Complete First Season by 20th Century Fox. The family was conceived by Groening shortly before a pitch for a series of animated shorts with producer James L. Brooks. Groening named each character (other than Bart an anagram for brat) after members of his own family. The shorts became part of the Fox series The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987.{{cite interview |last=Groening |first=Matt |author-link=Matt Groening |interviewer=Bianculli, David |title=Fresh Air |work=NPR |publisher=WHYY |url=https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1162008 |location=Philadelphia |date=February 14, 2003 |access-date=July 30, 2012 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071213045217/http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1162008 |archive-date=December 13, 2007 |url-status=live }} After a three-season run, the sketch was developed into a half-hour prime-time hit show.{{#invoke:cite news||url=https://www.nytimes.com/1990/02/21/movies/bad-language-hurt-feelings-and-success.html |title=Bad Language, Hurt Feelings and Success |date=February 21, 1990 |access-date=July 30, 2012 |last=Gerard |first=Jeremy |work=The New York Times |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120802021225/http://www.nytimes.com/1990/02/21/movies/bad-language-hurt-feelings-and-success.html |archive-date=August 2, 2012 |url-status=live }}
