The position of Lord Mayor of Chester was created on 10 March 1992 when the dignity was conferred on the city of Chester, England by Letters Patent as part of celebrations of 40th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II.{{London Gazette|issue=52861|page=4553|date=13 March 1992}} Prior to that the position had been that of Mayor of Chester.[http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/ches/vol5/pt2/pp305-321 British History Online: Early Mayors of Chester], accessed May 2018.
