Tropical cyclones are named to avoid confusion with the public and streamline communications, as more than one tropical cyclone can exist at a time. Names are drawn in order from predetermined lists,{{Cite web|url=https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/storm-names.html|title=Why do we name tropical storms and hurricanes?|website=National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration|language=EN-US|access-date=2019-02-14}} and are usually assigned to tropical cyclones with one-, three- or ten-minute windspeeds of more than {{convert|65|km/h|mph|abbr=on}}.
