"Virgin forests" are those old-growth forests that show no sign of having ever been logged.

A total of {{convert|2742|acre|ha}} of old-growth forest has been identified in Massachusetts.{{cite web |url=http://www.primalnature.org/ogeast/survey.html |title=Old Growth in the East: A Survey |author=Mary Byrd Davis |date= 23 January 2008 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120217114843/http://www.primalnature.org/ogeast/survey.html |archivedate=17 February 2012 |accessdate=27 August 2013}} Massachusetts' old growth occurs almost entirely within the Northeastern Highlands ecoregion.
