Lithodes richeri is a species of king crab.{{sfn|Macpherson|1990|p=219}}{{sfn|Ahyong|2010|p=60}} It has been found in Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and eastern Australia at depths between {{cvt|860-1220|m|ft}}.{{sfn|Macpherson|1990|p=219}}{{sfn|Ahyong|2010|p=66}}
Description
Lithodes richeri has a pyriform carapace and is overall deep-red in colour.{{sfn|Ahyong|2010|pp=62, 64}} The largest female carapace yet measured is {{convert|143|mm|in|abbr=on}} in postrostral length and {{convert|127|mm|in|abbr=on}} in width, while the largest male carapace is {{convert|112.1|mm|in|abbr=on}} in postrostral length and {{convert|105.8|mm|in|abbr=on}} in width.{{sfn|Ahyong|2010|pp=60–61}} When the rostrum – angled upward at about 30° – is included, it accounts for anywhere from slightly more to slightly less than half the length of the carapace.{{Sfn|Ahyong|2010|p=62}} This is exceptionally long among king crabs from Australia and New Zealand.{{Sfn|Ahyong|2010|p=64}} The chelipeds are unequal in size and are slightly larger relative to the postrostral carapace length in males compared to females.{{Sfn|Ahyong|2010|p=64}} Its first pair of walking legs are the shortest and the third pair the longest; all three pairs of walking legs are longer relative to postrostral carapace length in males compared to females.{{Sfn|Ahyong|2010|p=64}}
Distribution
Lithodes richeri is found in Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and eastern Australia between depths of {{cvt|860-1220|m|ft}}.{{sfn|Ahyong|2010|p=66}} In 2004, a large female king crab from the Seram Sea was identified as L. richeri, but this was later identified in 2018 as L. ahyongi, a new species.{{sfn|Ahyong|2010|p=66}}{{sfn|Takeda|2018|p=87}}
