Retrieved 29 September 2023. The succulent is adapted to the desert climate in which it lives. L. naureeniae was identified in 1980 by Desmond Cole, who became involved in Lithops research in 1947, from a specimen provided to him by Bruce Bayer, curator of the Karoo Botanic Garden, having been collected by Peter V. Bruyns in Namaqualand.{{cite journal |last1=Cole |first1=Desmond T. |title=A New Species of Lithops N.E.Br. |journal=The National Cactus and Succulent Journal |date=1980 |volume=35 |issue=3 |pages=74–75 |url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/42790949 |issn=0027-8858}}{{Cite web|url=http://www.lithops.info/de/personen/desmond_naureen_cole.html|title=Desmond and Naureen Cole|website=lithops.info}} It is named after Cole's wife, Naureen Cole.
