Career and impact
Liu began her Antarctic research in 2009 after working as a technical manager in the field of remote sensing applications for three years. Her research focuses on ice shelves in Antarctica and their responses to climate change.{{Cite journal|last1=Liu|first1=Yan|last2=Moore|first2=John C.|last3=Cheng|first3=Xiao|last4=Gladstone|first4=Rupert M.|last5=Bassis|first5=Jeremy N.|last6=Liu|first6=Hongxing|last7=Wen|first7=Jiahong|last8=Hui|first8=Fengming|date=2015-03-17|title=Ocean-driven thinning enhances iceberg calving and retreat of Antarctic ice shelves|journal=Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences|language=en|volume=112|issue=11|pages=3263–3268|doi=10.1073/pnas.1415137112|issn=0027-8424|pmc=4371949|pmid=25733856|bibcode=2015PNAS..112.3263L|doi-access=free}}{{Cite journal|last1=Åström|first1=J. Liu's work on iceberg calving and ice shelf retreat in Antarctica used satellite images to measure all icebergs larger than 1 km2 calving from the entire Antarctic coastline, and the state of health of all the ice shelves. Some large ice shelves are growing while many smaller ice shelves are shrinking. They found high rates of iceberg calving from Antarctic ice shelves that are undergoing basal melt-induced thinning, which suggests the fate of ice shelves may be more sensitive to ocean forcing than was previously thought.{{Cite web|url=http://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/technology/science-research/article/1754095/antarctica-losing-enough-ice-every-year-fill|title=Antarctica losing enough ice every year to fill the Three Gorges reservoir 19 times|date=2015-04-06|website=|publisher=South China Morning Post|access-date=2016-06-13}}
