A log cradle container is a specialized, {{convert|20|ft|m|2|adj=on}} open top and open-ended, intermodal container designed for carrying (or cradling) logs.[https://harvesttech.events/new-cradle-containers-revolutionise-log-transport/ harvesttech]{{cite web |title=New cradle containers revolutionise log transportation |website=The New Zealand Herald |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210719162305/https://www.nzherald.co.nz/rotorua-daily-post/news/forestry-boost-new-cradle-containers-revolutionise-log-transport/COEX5DO56WHRLEX3OLSJIWYI4E/ |archive-date=2021-07-19 |url-status=live |url=https://www.nzherald.co.nz/rotorua-daily-post/news/forestry-boost-new-cradle-containers-revolutionise-log-transport/COEX5DO56WHRLEX3OLSJIWYI4E/}} This configuration allows it to be loaded from the open top by means of a loader[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIe_bJCi1-A Log cradle container being loaded] and the logs can protrude from the ends. Like a regular 20-foot container it has eight twistlocks. From where the container is loaded with logs it can be put unto a truck and then on a flat wagon after a short road trip. At the end of the train journey it may be put on a truck to continue to a further destination. The use of the container saves unloading the truck, loading the flat wagon, unloading the flat wagon and loading a truck. In other words it can be handled like any other intermodal container.

This container was designed jointly by KiwiRail and Royal Wolf.[https://www.royalwolf.com.au/ Royal Wolf]{{cite web |title=Ben R Buddo, Royal Wolf Holdings Ltd: Profile and Biography |website=Bloomberg News |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210731192202/https://www.bloomberg.com/profile/person/17280049 |archive-date=2021-07-31 |url-status=live |url=https://www.bloomberg.com/profile/person/17280049}}
