In 1970, a field team from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) discovered the Longgu Cave in Jiansi County and conducted an official excavation.{{cite book|author=Yang Baocheng|title=Archaeological Discovery and Research in Hubei|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=A3MeywnViQ0C|year=1995|publisher=Wuhan University Publishing House|isbn=978-7-307-01891-4}} The Cave spans from 1.2 to 2.5 million years ago{{cite book|title=The Study of Three Gorges Culture in Modern Perspective|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=sKQzAQAAIAAJ|year=2006|publisher=Bashu Publishing House|isbn=978-7-80659-831-3}} and was named "Jianshi Homo Erectus Site" by the IVPP.{{cite book|title=Hubei Yearbook|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=7eLjAAAAMAAJ|year=2005|publisher=Hubei People's Press}}
