Philippe Hallais, aka Low Jack (born 1985), is an electronic music composer and DJ, living in Paris.
For four years, he has been tightening together club-oriented and experimental music sounds, and acting as a DJ and live performer in clubs and the digital arts & music festival circuit.
Biography
Hallais was born in Tegucigalpa (Honduras). He entered the music world through a series of dance music EPs, with the Slow Dance EP charting #1 on Clone.nl. Slow Dance, Free Pyjamas, Like It Soft and Flashes show his sound palette, from electro influenced by artists like The Egyptian Lover to more tense and dark techno.
His first long-player Garifuna Variations, was released in 2014 by the dance label L.I.E.S (New York). Based on a commissioned live performance by the French Musée du Quai Branly and festival Les Siestes Electroniques, the recordings put together the imaginary tales and sounds of the Garifuna people, a tribe from Honduras about which little is known. The result has been described as a sonic fiction blending ethnographic recordings and industrial music.{{cite web|url=http://www.les-siestes-electroniques.com/Concept|title=Présentation - Les Siestes Electroniques|website=Les-siestes-electroniques.com|accessdate=2016-04-18}}
This same year, he began touring as a DJ in France. In 2014, he was invited by the GRM (a French national institution in electronic experimental music) to play for the celebration of the anniversary of the institution.{{cite web|url=http://www.institut-national-audiovisuel.fr/presse/pdf/1058.pdf|title=Quand les GRM Tools Spaces repoussent les limites spatiales du son…|last=|first=|date=|website=Institut-national-audiovisuel.fr|publisher=|accessdate=2016-04-20}}
2015 began with the release of Imaginary Boogie, a 6 tracks EP on The Trilogy Tapes (London) presented as a failed attempt at producing "boogie-infused" house music. His second album Sewing Machine on French label In Paradisum (Paris) marked a decisive step with profile from national press Libération,{{cite web|url=http://next.liberation.fr/musique/2015/06/14/low-jack-machine-a-en-decoudre_1329524 |title=Low Jack, machine à en découdre - Culture / Next |website=Next.liberation.fr |date=2015-06-14 |accessdate=2016-04-20}} as well as reviews in specialist music publications like Fact Magazine,{{cite web|author=|url=http://www.factmag.com/2015/03/22/low-jack-sewing-machine-in-paradisum/ |title=Parisian producer Low Jack announces album for In Paradisum |website=Factmag.com |date= 22 March 2015|accessdate=2016-04-20}} The Quietus,{{cite web|url=http://thequietus.com/articles/17877-low-jack-sewing-machine-review |title=Reviews | Low Jack |publisher=The Quietus |date=2015-05-20 |accessdate=2016-04-20}} {{ill|Tsugi (magazine)|lt=Tsugi|fr|Tsugi}},{{cite web|url=http://www.tsugi.fr/news/2015/05/18/en-ecoute-sewing-machine-nouvel-album-low-jack-10123 |title=En écoute: Sewing Machine, le nouvel album de Low Jack | Tsugi |language=fr |publisher=Tsugi.fr |date=2015-05-18 |accessdate=2016-04-20}} Les Inrockuptibles.{{cite web|author=Marc-Aurèle Baly Suivre |url=http://www.lesinrocks.com/2015/05/21/musique/on-a-discute-avec-low-jack-producteur-parisien-jusquau-boutiste-11749271/ |title=On a discuté avec Low Jack, producteur parisien jusqu'au-boutiste |publisher=Les Inrocks |date=2015-05-21 |accessdate=2016-04-20}} According to Philip Sherburne writing for Pitchfork Media, "Low Jack (aka Philippe Hallais) is one of the more exciting producers to emerge from the experimental techno community".{{cite web|url=http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/20418-sewing-machine/|title=Sewing Machine|last=|first=|date=|website=Pitchfork.com|publisher=|accessdate=2016-04-20}}
