Lutgarde Raskin is a Belgian-American scientist and Professor of Environmental Engineering. She is best known for her studies of microbial ecology in engineered water systems for sewage treatment and drinking water production.
Raskin earned her B.S. and M.S. in engineering and her B.S. in economics from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. In 1993, she completed her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois. From 1993-2005, she was a member of the faculty of the University of Illinois. Since 2005, she has been a member of the faculty of the University of Michigan where she currently holds the Altarum Institute/ERIM Russell O’Neal Endowed Professorship.{{cite web |url=http://altarum.org/about/news-and-events/altarum%E2%80%99s-endowed-professorship-at-university-of-michigan-awarded-to-lutgarde-raskin |title=Altarum's Endowed Professorship at University of Michigan Awarded to Lutgarde Raskin |publisher=Altarum Institute |date=2013-08-30 |accessdate=2016-07-07}}
Raskin is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM){{cite web |url=http://cee.engin.umich.edu/lutgarde-raskin-elected-aam |title=Lutgarde Raskin elected to the AAM |publisher=University of Michigan |date=2009-01-30 |accessdate=2016-07-07}} and the Water Environment Federation (WEF).{{cite web |url=http://www.wef.org/publications/page_wet.aspx?id=12884901955&page=ca§ion=Business |title=Business |publisher=Water Environment Federation |date=2012-09-01 |accessdate=2016-07-07}} In 2006, she won the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers, in 2007, she won the Frontier Award in Research from the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors, and in 2016, she won the ISME/IWA Biocluster Award.{{cite web |url=https://iwa-network.org/news/winners-of-the-ismeiwa-biocluster-award-2016-announced/ |title=Winners of the ISME/IWA BioCluster Award 2016 Announced |publisher=International Water Association |date=2016-05-25 |accessdate=2021-02-15 }} In 2021, Raskin was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering for, "application of genetic tools to improve anaerobic biological water treatment."{{cite web |url=https://www.nae.edu/248499/National-Academy-of-Engineering-Elects-106-Members-and-23-International-Members |title=National Academy of Engineering Elects 106 Members and 23 International Members |publisher=National Academy of Engineering |date=2021-02-09 |accessdate=2021-02-15 }}
Raskin has advocated for changes in the operation of drinking water treatment facilities to encourage the growth of potentially beneficial microorganisms.{{cite web |url=https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn22160-boosting-bacteria-in-drinking-water-may-improve-health/ |title=Boosting bacteria in drinking water may improve health |publisher=New Scientist |date=2012-08-10 |accessdate=2016-07-07}}{{cite web |url=http://www.thecuttingedgenews.com/index.php?article=75549&pageid=28&pagename=Sci-Tech |title=Tap Water is not as Safe as We Think |publisher=The Cutting Edge |date=2012-08-26 |accessdate=2016-07-07}} In the wake of the Flint water crisis, she responded to allegations by Marc Edwards that researchers at the University of Michigan declined to collaborate on joint research of the problem.{{cite web |url=http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/michigan/flint-water-crisis/2016/02/18/um-flint-lead-expert/80586022/ |title=UM declined to team with lead expert in Flint |publisher=The Detroit News |date=2016-02-18 |accessdate=2016-07-07}}
