Mitochondrial carrier homolog 2 also known as MTCH2 is a protein which in humans is encoded by the MTCH2 gene.{{cite journal | vauthors = Grinberg M, Schwarz M, Zaltsman Y, Eini T, Niv H, Pietrokovski S, Gross A | title = Mitochondrial carrier homolog 2 is a target of tBID in cells signaled to die by tumor necrosis factor alpha | journal = Molecular and Cellular Biology | volume = 25 | issue = 11 | pages = 4579–90 | date = June 2005 | pmid = 15899861 | pmc = 1140633 | doi = 10.1128/MCB.25.11.4579-4590.2005 }}{{cite journal | vauthors = Gross A | title = Mitochondrial carrier homolog 2: a clue to cracking the BCL-2 family riddle? | journal = Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes | volume = 37 | issue = 3 | pages = 113–9 | date = June 2005 | pmid = 16167168 | doi = 10.1007/s10863-005-6222-3 | s2cid = 2395673 }}{{cite journal | vauthors = Schwarz M, Andrade-Navarro MA, Gross A | title = Mitochondrial carriers and pores: key regulators of the mitochondrial apoptotic program? | journal = Apoptosis | volume = 12 | issue = 5 | pages = 869–76 | date = May 2007 | pmid = 17453157 | doi = 10.1007/s10495-007-0748-2 | doi-access = free }}{{cite journal | vauthors = Yu K, Ganesan K, Tan LK, Laban M, Wu J, Zhao XD, Li H, Leung CH, Zhu Y, Wei CL, Hooi SC, Miller L, Tan P | display-authors = 6 | title = A precisely regulated gene expression cassette potently modulates metastasis and survival in multiple solid cancers | journal = PLOS Genetics | volume = 4 | issue = 7 | pages = e1000129 | date = July 2008 | pmid = 18636107 | pmc = 2444049 | doi = 10.1371/journal.pgen.1000129 | veditors = Chang HY | editor-link1 = Howard Y. MTCH2 resides on the outer mitochondrial membrane where it co-localizes with the apoptotic Bcl-2 family protein BID.{{cite journal | vauthors = Gross A | title = BCL-2 family proteins as regulators of mitochondria metabolism | journal = Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Bioenergetics | volume = 1857 | issue = 8 | pages = 1243–1246 | date = August 2016 | pmid = 26827940 | doi = 10.1016/j.bbabio.2016.01.017 | doi-access = free }}
Clinical significance
MTCH2 assists in the recruitment of BID into the mitochondria during apoptosis.
Variants of the MTCH2 gene may be associated with obesity.{{cite journal | vauthors = Renström F, Payne F, Nordström A, Brito EC, Rolandsson O, Hallmans G, Barroso I, Nordström P, Franks PW | display-authors = 6 | title = Replication and extension of genome-wide association study results for obesity in 4923 adults from northern Sweden | journal = Human Molecular Genetics | volume = 18 | issue = 8 | pages = 1489–96 | date = April 2009 | pmid = 19164386 | pmc = 2664142 | doi = 10.1093/hmg/ddp041 }} MTCH2 represses mitochondrial metabolism such that a deficiency of MTCH2 increases energy consumption and production by mitochondria.
