Reception

The Hindu wrote "CERTAIN CHARACTERS never get stale - Robin Hood for instance. But different incidents have to be weaved in every time if the story has to sell, especially when presented on celluloid. And this is what Nasser has tried in Kana Film Makers's Maayan. Sundara Thirumal's story takes off well, but flounders after the first half. And because it goes limp midway, the impact of the climax is considerably reduced. (The screenplay and dialogue are also by him)".{{Cite web |last=Rangarajan |first=Malathi |date=21 September 2001 |title=Film Review: Maayan |url=http://www.hindu.com/2001/09/21/stories/09210222.htm |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071109132143/http://www.hindu.com/2001/09/21/stories/09210222.htm |archive-date=9 November 2007 |access-date=2 August 2023 |website=The Hindu}} Visual Dasan of Kalki praised Nassar's acting but panned his character design while also praising him for portraying folk arts and dances and Pasupathy's acting however he felt Nassar messed up in one aspect, when the screenplay is based on true events, the backdrop of the plot jumps for no reason hence the story kicks like a donkey.{{Cite magazine |date=30 September 2001 |title=மாயன் |url=https://archive.org/details/kalki2001-09-30/page/64/mode/2up |url-status=live |magazine=Kalki |language=ta |archive-url=https://archive.today/20230801125016/https://archive.org/details/kalki2001-09-30/page/64/mode/2up |archive-date=1 August 2023 |access-date=1 August 2023}} Chennai Online wrote "The narrative flows smoothly, though the second half could have been trimmed a little. Nasser is more focused and displays a firmer grasp over the medium than he had done in his earlier two directorial ventures".{{cite web|url=http://chennaionline.com/moviereviews/tammov143.asp|title=Maayan|website=Chennai Online|first=Malini|last=Mannath|access-date=29 October 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20031212023819/http://chennaionline.com/moviereviews/tammov143.asp|archive-date=12 December 2003}}
