History and profile

MacUser started publication in late 1985{{cite news|title=Long-running Apple rag MacUser Magazine shuts its doors after 30 years|url=http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/01/16/long-running-apple-rag-macuser-magazine-shuts-its-doors-after-30-years|accessdate=17 February 2016|work=Apple Insider|date=16 January 2015}} as a four-color monthly and contained general interest Mac articles. In 1986 the magazine was acquired by Ziff Davis.{{cite book|title=U-M Computing News|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=DpXvAAAAMAAJ&pg=PR69|accessdate=24 May 2020|year=1987|publisher=UM Libraries|page=69|id=UOM:39015072620332}}{{cite book|author=Felix Dennis|title=How to Get Rich: One of the World's Greatest Entrepreneurs Shares His Secrets|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=rOW9cF_7rgsC&pg=PT172|accessdate=24 May 2020|date=12 June 2008|publisher=Penguin Publishing Group|isbn=978-1-4406-3246-4|page=172}} It had reviews and regular columns for novice and experienced users with a more humorous view of the Macintosh world than other publications of the time. Games were reviewed and well as business and productivity software. A unique feature, not available in other publications, was the inclusion of about 250 capsule reviews in each edition.{{cite book|author=Ted Hanss|title=Magazines for Mac Users|work=U-M Computing News, Volume 1|publisher=University of Michigan Computing Center|year=1986|location=Ann Arbor|page=32|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=uG0qAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA32|oclc=15471402}}

The initial cover price was $3.50, with an annual subscription of $23 (or $42 for two years.)

In 1997, the publication was absorbed into Macworld as Macworld, incorporating MacUser (a name reflected subtly on the magazine's Table of Contents page) reflecting a consolidation of the Ziff Davis-owned MacUser magazine into the International Data Group-owned Macworld within the new Mac Publishing joint venture between the two publishers.{{cite web |title=IDG and Ziff to Merge Mac Publications |url=http://www.pcworld.com/article/5143/idg_and_ziff_to_merge_mac_publications.html |work=PCWorld|publisher=PCWorld Communications, Inc.|url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20100329115344/http://www.pcworld.com/article/5143/idg_and_ziff_to_merge_mac_publications.html|archivedate=29 March 2010|accessdate=12 September 2014}}
