=British pastoral licences=
In 1840, the Bolden brothers were the first British pastoralists to obtain crown leaseholds in the region. The immense leasehold, named Bolden's run, covered large amounts of land west of the Hopkins River. In 1842, the Boldens' leasehold was divided up and the resultant properties around what was to become the Macarthur region were known as Eumeralla East, Eumeralla West and Harton Hills (which was also known as Blackfellows Creek). The Eumeralla leaseholds were taken up by James Hunter and his associates, while Harton Hills was occupied by William Carmichael.{{cite web |title=History |url=https://www.macarthurhs.macweb.com.au/history.htm |publisher=Macarthur Historical Society |access-date=25 April 2021}}{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article138096644 |title=PICTURESQUE VICTORIA. |newspaper=The Australasian |volume=XXXVIII |issue=992 |location=Victoria, Australia |date=4 April 1885 |access-date=25 April 2021 |page=1 (THE AUSTRALASIAN SUPPLEMENT) |via=National Library of Australia}}{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article142145186 |title=FAMOUS PASTORAL PROPERTIES: Merrang, on the Hopkins River, is Famous for Its Lincoln Sheep |newspaper=The Australasian |volume=CLI |issue=4,841 |location=Victoria, Australia |date=11 October 1941 |access-date=25 April 2021 |page=33 |via=National Library of Australia}}
