Macks Peak is part of the Spring Mountains which are a subrange of the Great Basin Ranges. The peak is located {{convert|30|mi|km}} northwest of Las Vegas in the Mount Charleston Wilderness, on land managed by the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises nearly {{convert|1900|ft|m|abbr=off|sp=us}} above Macks Canyon in {{convert|1|mi|km|spell=in}}. This mountain's toponym has not been officially adopted by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, however Macks Canyon has been.{{cite gnis|id=860447|name=Macks Canyon|access-date=June 16, 2023}}
Climate
Macks Peak is set within the Great Basin Desert which has hot summers and cold winters.{{cite journal | author = Peel, M. C. |author2=Finlayson, B. L. |author3=McMahon, T. A. | year = 2007 | title = Updated world map of the Köppen−Geiger climate classification | journal = Hydrol. Earth Syst. Sci. | volume = 11 | issn = 1027-5606}} The desert is an example of a cold desert climate as the desert's elevation makes temperatures cooler than lower elevation deserts. Due to the high elevation and aridity, temperatures drop sharply after sunset. Summer nights are comfortably cool. Winter highs are generally above freezing, and winter nights are bitterly cold, with temperatures often dropping well below freezing.
Climbing
An ascent of the peak involves hiking and scrambling {{convert|6|mi|km|spell=in}} (round-trip) with {{convert|1177|ft|0}} of elevation gain.Branch Whitney (1997), Hiking Las Vegas: 60 Hikes Within 60 Minutes of the Strip, Huntington Press, {{ISBN|9780929712215}}, p. 75. Access is via the Macks Canyon Road from Highway 156.
