{{main|Cassini periodical cicadas}}
Magicicada tredecassini is a species of periodical cicada endemic to the United States. It has a 13-year lifecycle but is otherwise indistinguishable from the 17-year periodical cicada Magicicada cassini. The two species are usually discussed together as "cassini periodical cicadas" or "cassini-type periodical cicadas." Unlike other periodical cicadas, cassini-type males may synchronize their courting behavior so that tens of thousands of males sing and fly in unison.{{cite web |title=Periodical Cicada Page |url=http://insects.ummz.lsa.umich.edu/fauna/Michigan_Cicadas/Periodical/ |publisher=University of Michigan |accessdate=10 June 2011}}{{cite book |last=Capinera |first=John L. |title=Encyclopedia of Entomology |year=2008 |publisher=Springer |isbn=978-1-4020-6242-1 |page=2792 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=i9ITMiiohVQC}}{{citation |last1=Alexander |first1=Richard D |first2=Thomas Edwin |last2=Moore |title=The Evolutionary Relationships of 17-year and 13-year Cicadas, and Three New Species (Homoptera, Cicadidae, Magicicada) |year=1962 |publisher=Museum of Zoology, University of Michigan |location=Ann Arbor}}
Life cycle
Their median life cycle from egg to natural adult death is around thirteen years. However, their life cycle can range from nine years to seventeen years.{{cite journal |last1=Campbell |first1=Matthew |title=Genome expansion via lineage splitting and genome reduction in the cicada endosymbiont Hodgkinia - Supporting Information |journal=Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America |date=18 August 2015 |volume=112 |issue=33 |pages=10192–10199 |doi=10.1073/pnas.1421386112 |pmid=26286984 |pmc=4547289 |url=https://www.pnas.org/content/suppl/2015/05/16/1421386112.DCSupplemental/pnas.201421386SI.pdf |accessdate=13 October 2020|doi-access=free }}
