The Mahindra Rakshak ({{Lit|Protector}}) is an armored military light utility vehicle made by Mahindra Defense Systems,{{cite web|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20170129232225/http://www.mahindra.com/news-room/press-release/1294305468|url=http://www.mahindra.com:80/news-room/press-release/1294305468|title=Mahindra hands over India's 1st armoured capsule based light bulletproof vehicle to Mumbai Police|publisher=Mahindra|archivedate=2017-01-29|access-date=2020-03-22|url-status=live}} based on the chassis of the Mahindra Commander jeep. Primarily used by the Indian army, it is also used by other countries and police in numerous Indian States. The Rakshak is being replaced with the Mahindra Armored Light Specialist Vehicle (ALSV) chosen as its successor.

The Rakshak was designed to be used in counter-insurgency and anti-terrorism operations.{{cite web|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20170813134852/http://www.deccanherald.com/content/471670/war-peace-jeep-rolls-on.html|url=http://www.deccanherald.com/content/471670/war-peace-jeep-rolls-on.html|title=War or peace, the jeep rolls on|publisher=Deccan Herald|date=2015-04-15|author=Michael Patrao|archivedate=2017-08-13}}

History

The Rakshak jeep was launched in 2000 in collaboration with Plasan. The vehicle was first manufactured under Mahindra Specialties.{{cite web|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20060517161902/http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/2000/05/25/stories/192502mh.htm|url=http://www.thehindubusinessline.com:80/2000/05/25/stories/192502mh.htm|publisher=Hindu Business Line|title=New Mahindra vehicles hit the road|archivedate=2006-05-17|date=2000-05-25|access-date=2020-03-22|url-status=live}}

The Rakshak was placed under scrutiny in 2008 when the government alleged that the engine used was suitable for 1,600 kg and below and that the vehicle was 2,660 kg, making it very unsafe to use in areas where militants have a strong influence.{{cite web|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20170813131557/http://archive.deccanherald.com/deccanherald.com/Content/Apr62008/national2008040661365.asp?section=updatenews|url=http://archive.deccanherald.com/deccanherald.com/Content/Apr62008/national2008040661365.asp?section=updatenews|publisher=Deccan Herald|archivedate=2017-08-13|title=Mahindra says 'Rakshak' saved soldiers' lives|date=2008-04-06}} In response to this allegation, then MDS CEO Brig. Khutab Hai stated that the company had supplied the army with Rakshaks outfitted with new engines with a higher power and increased torque in order improve the vehicle's ability to climb in hilly terrain. It was suggested that the contract was made under a short time with the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) investigating if any rules were violated.{{cite news|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20170813135823/http://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/cag-questions-army-s-rakshak-purchase-108031601035_1.html|url=http://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/cag-questions-army-s-rakshak-purchase-108031601035_1.html|publisher=Business Standard|archivedate=2017-08-13|date=2008-03-16|author=Ajai Shukla|title=CAG questions army's Rakshak purchase|newspaper=Business Standard India }}
