The station consists of a side platform serving a single elevated track. There is no station building, only a shelter on the platform for waiting passengers and an automatic ticket vending machine. History
Japanese National Railways (JNR) opened the station on 22 February 1987 as an additional station on the existing track of the Nippō Main Line. With the privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987, the station came under the control of JR Kyushu.{{Teishajo|II|753}}
On 17 March 2018, Maki became a "Smart Support Station". Under this scheme, although the station became unstaffed, passengers can receive assistance via intercom from staff at a central support centre.{{Cite web |title=大分市内の一部の駅が「Smart Support Station」に変わります|trans-title=Some stations in Ōita City to become "Smart Support Stations"|url=http://www.jrkyushu.co.jp/news/__icsFiles/afieldfile/2018/02/16/180216NewsreleaseSSS.pdf|publisher=JR Kyushu|date=16 February 2018|accessdate=14 April 2018}}{{cite web |url=https://www.oita-press.co.jp/1010000000/2018/03/17/JD0056724814|title="最終列車"見届け、制帽脱ぐ 無人化牧駅、駅長最後の業務|trans-title=Watching the last train, taking off his cap, Maki Station becomes unstaffed, Station Manager's last duty|accessdate=1 May 2018|date=17 March 2018|website=Ōita Gōdō Shimbun|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20180316203242/https://www.oita-press.co.jp/1010000000/2018/03/17/JD0056724814|archivedate=March 16, 2018|url-status=dead}}
