Biography

Asashima was born in Sado, Niigata in 1944.[http://www.brh.co.jp/s_library/j_site/scientistweb/no76/ “変わらない熱情で、中胚葉へと変わる過程を見る” Biography of Makoto Asashima] {{in lang|ja}} He graduated from Tokyo University of Education in March 1967, and received his Ph.D. from The University of Tokyo in 1972.{{cite web|url= https://unit.aist.go.jp/scrc/cie/intro/asashima_en.html|title= Makoto Asashima, Ph.D.|date= August 2010|publisher= Advanced Industrial Science Technology|location= Japan|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20140202105448/https://unit.aist.go.jp/scrc/cie/intro/asashima_en.html|archive-date= 2014-02-02|access-date= 29 January 2014|url-status= dead}} He was a postdoctoral fellow under Heinz Tiedemann at Free University of Berlin between 1972 and 1974, and a member of the faculty of Yokohama City University between 1972 and 1993, before being appointed as a professor at The University of Tokyo in 1993.
