Legal troubles
In June 1986, Barnwell, who had been traded by the Raiders to Washington Redskins after the 1984 season, was arrested and charged with cocaine possession. Barnwell had been a free agent at this point after being released by the New Orleans Saints in December 1985. A warrant on an unrelated matter had already been issued for Barnwell when he was found in a hotel room with $400 worth of cocaine.{{cite web|url=https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1986-07-30-sp-18653-story.html|title=Former Raider Barnwell Pleads Guilty to Cocaine Possession|work=Los Angeles Times|date=July 30, 1986|accessdate=2020-04-05}}
