Mandate Pictures was an independent full-service film production company acquired by Lionsgate in 2007.

History

In 2005, Mandate Pictures was officially formed when the Los Angeles–based Senator International completed a management buyout from German indie giant Senator Entertainment AG.{{cite web |url=http://www.screendaily.com/drake-leads-management-buyout-of-senator-international/4021575.article |title=Drake leads management buyout of Senator International |work=Screen Daily|access-date=2012-03-15 }} Joe Drake, Brian Goldsmith and Nathan Kahane became the sole proprietors of Mandate Pictures.{{cite web |url=http://www.allbusiness.com/services/motion-pictures/4910580-1.html|title=Senator Turns To Mandate |work=All Business|access-date=2012-03-15 |publisher=Mandate Pictures}} At the time, the company was helmed by President Joe Drake, chief financial officer Brian Goldsmith, and Nathan Kahane as the company's President of Motion Pictures, overseeing the daily creative operations of the new company. Mandate Pictures independently produced and financed feature films by leveraging international sales, while seeking out domestic distributors on a film by film basis.{{cite web |url= https://variety.com/2005/film/markets-festivals/busy-mandate-firms-up-exec-ranks-1117924790/ |title=Busy Mandate firms up exec ranks |work=Variety |date=21 June 2005 |access-date=2012-03-15 }}

On September 10, 2007, the partners sold Mandate Pictures to Lionsgate, and as part of that deal Kahane stayed on as President of Mandate Pictures while Mandate CEO Joe Drake became President of the Motion Picture Group and Co-Chief Operating Officer at Lionsgate.{{cite web |url=https://variety.com/2007/film/markets-festivals/drake-brings-mandate-to-lionsgate-1117973799/|title=Drake brings Mandate to Lionsgate |work=Variety |date=10 October 2007 |access-date=2012-03-15 }}{{cite web |url=http://www.allbusiness.com/media-telecommunications/movies-sound-recording/6626881-1.html|title=Drake's Mandate to Lionsgate |work=All Business|access-date=2012-03-15 }} After the acquisition, Mandate operated as an independent brand under Drake and Kahane, releasing commercial and independent films worldwide while retaining the creative autonomy and capital to finance, develop, package and produce theatrical films.{{cite web |url=http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/lionsgate-acquires-independent-film-production-and-distribution-company-mandate-pictures-57908357.html|title=Lionsgate Acquires Independent Film Production and Distribution Company Mandate Pictures |work=PR Newswire|access-date=2012-03-15 }}{{cite web|url=http://www.mandatepictures.com/Profile.aspx|title=Mandate Pictures|access-date=2012-03-15|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://archive.today/20070514145211/http://www.mandatepictures.com/Profile.aspx|archive-date=2007-05-14}}

In the spring of 2012, Drake and Kahane launched Good Universe, a new full-service motion picture financing, production and global sales company.{{cite web |url=http://www.thewrap.com/deal-central/article/joe-drake-nathan-kahane-launch-good-universe-38106 |title= Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane launch Good Universe |work= The Wrap|date= May 2012 |access-date=February 15, 2013}} The launch comes as the collaborators transition out of Lionsgate, opening its doors fully staffed and with films from the development slate at predecessor company Mandate Pictures.{{cite web |url= https://deadline.com/2012/05/lionsgates-joe-drake-starts-new-full-service-film-company-with-nathan-kahane-265175/ |title= Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane Starts New Film Label Good Universe |work=Deadline |date= May 2012 |access-date=February 15, 2013}} Good Universe will work with Lionsgate to complete a number of Mandate films and provide certain management and production services on a number of Mandate library properties.
