Manfred Markus

Manfred Markus (born 15 February 1941 in Hagen, Germany), is a German-Austrian linguist and university professor. Education and career
Markus studied philosophy, pedagogy, English, and German at the universities of Heidelberg, Reading, and Göttingen.{{cite web |title=Curriculum vitae |url=https://www.uibk.ac.at/anglistik/staff/markus/cv-markus.pdf |website=Universität Innsbruck |access-date=5 September 2022}} After attaining his M.A., he moved to the University of Regensburg, where he completed his Ph.D. and was awarded his Habilitation in 1980. With a background in English and American literary studies, Markus after 1975 focused on linguistics, both synchronic and diachronic. He became widely known as the director of ICAMET (the Innsbruck Computer Archive of Machine-Readable English Texts), with the two historical text corpora Innsbruck English Letters 1386-1698 and Innsbruck Middle English Prose on his record as compiler.{{cite web |url=https://www.uibk.ac.at/anglistik/research/projects/ |title=Projects |author= |website=Institut für Anglistik |publisher=University of Innsbruck |access-date=1 June 2022}} His main achievement as a corpus linguist, however, is the creation of an online version of Joseph Wright's comprehensive English Dialect Dictionary (1898-1905), EDD Online,{{cite web |url=https://eddonline-proj.uibk.ac.at/edd/termsOfUse.jsp |title=Innsbruck EDD Online 3.0 |author=Manfred Markus |date=2019 |access-date=1 June 2022}} which, by its sophisticated software, allows for an access to English dialects worldwide from 1700 to 1903. Personal life
Markus has been living in Innsbruck since 1981. He has both the Austrian and the German citizenship.
