Premise
The series is created, written, and presented by Jay Foreman and Mark Cooper-Jones. Mark Cooper-Jones is a former geography teacher, and the pair met at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where both were performing in 2009 or 2010.{{cite web |last1=Foreman |first1=Jay |date=13 September 2021 |title=Mark Cooper-Jones an… |url=https://www.reddit.com/r/JayForeman/comments/pkfnqa/comment/hco3dq0/ |access-date=18 June 2025 |website=reddit.com |via=Reddit}}{{Bsn|reason=The current source is insufficiently reliable (WP:NOTRS).|date=June 2025}} The series started in 2016, and has aired for four series. The episodes are a mix of comedy and geography, with each episode answering a short geographical question, often involving maps. The style has been compared to Horrible Histories and the pair cite their inspiration as Monty Python. The videos feature deadpan, split-second visual gags, and comic sketches.{{Cite web |last=Fitch |first=Chris |date=9 August 2016 |title=Map Men: teaching geography through comedy |url=https://geographical.co.uk/places/mapping/item/1859-map-men-teaching-geography-through-comedy |url-status=unfit |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220516091706/https://geographical.co.uk/places/mapping/item/1859-map-men-teaching-geography-through-comedy |archive-date=16 May 2022 |access-date=6 April 2024 |website=Geographical Magazine}}
The pair have claimed the show's success to be due to the growing redundancy of maps as an everyday item, leaving them to be "geeky". They also cite the mix of comedy and geography as the unique element behind the series, leading to its success compared to other more education-based alternatives. In 2021, the series was nominated under the "learning and education" category for the 11th Streamy Awards, losing to Veritasium.{{Cite web |title=11th Annual Streamy Nominees |url=https://www.streamys.org/nominees-winners/11th-annual-nominees/ |access-date=2024-04-06 |website=The Streamy Awards |language=en}} In 2024, an edited version of the video about why some British place-names are hard to pronounce won 'Video of the Year' in the inaugural UK and Ireland TikTok Awards.{{Cite news |last=Rufo |first=Yasmin |date=3 December 2024 |title=Social media stars crowned in first UK and Ireland TikTok awards |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cgrwjzrq0ppt?post=asset%3Af81b40e0-78e9-40d8-b7a6-553475679d07#post |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241205150921/https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cgrwjzrq0ppt |archive-date=5 December 2024 |access-date=5 January 2025 |work=BBC News}}
