Marc Pittonet (born 3 June 1996) is an Australian rules footballer who plays for the Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He previously played for the Hawthorn Football Club from 2015 to 2019.
AFL career
Pittonet was drafted by Hawthorn Football Club with pick 50 in 2014 AFL Draft from the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup, the first of only two ruckman drafted that day. A solidly built teenager when drafted, {{AFL Haw}} needed an additional ruckman after trading Luke Lowden to {{AFL Ade}}.{{Cite web|url=https://www.hawthornfc.com.au/player-profile/marc-pittonet|title=Marc Pittonet|website=hawthornfc.com.au|language=en|access-date=2019-11-01}} He made his AFL debut against {{AFL Gee}} in Round 1, 2016 as a late change,[http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-03-28/late-change-big-hawk-to-debut-ceglar-out Late change: Big Hawk to debut, Ceglar out] but never commanded a regular place in the senior team in five seasons with Hawthorn, managing only seven senior games over that time as a back-up ruckman to Ben McEvoy and Jonathon Ceglar. He played primarily for Box Hill, Hawthorn's {{VFL-affiliate}}, over that time, and was a dominant force in the ruck in the club's 2018 VFL grand final victory with 57 hitouts.{{cite web|url=https://boxhillhawks.com.au/grand-final-match-report/|title=Grand Final Match Report|author=Chris Nanni|date=25 September 2018|accessdate=18 April 2022|publisher=Box Hill Football Club}}
At the end of 2019, with two ruckmen still ahead of him at Hawthorn, Pittonet requested a trade to the Carlton Football Club in search of greater senior opportunity;{{Cite web|url=https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-10-14/opportunity-knocks-as-big-hawk-requests-trade-to-carlton|title=Opportunity knocks as big Hawk requests trade to Carlton|website=afl.com.au|language=en|access-date=2019-11-01}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/trade-whispers-sydney-forward-daniel-menzel-is-in-limbo-hawthorn-ruckman-marc-pittonet-is-on-carltons-radar/news-story/45f0dd1cfbf06f569114bf5d55c16206|title=AFL trade whispers, AFL trade news, Daniel Menzel, Marc Pittonet, Sydney trade news, Hawthorn trade news, Carlton trade news {{!}} FOX SPORTS|date=2019-10-08|website=www.foxsports.com.au|language=en|access-date=2019-11-01}} he was traded along with draft pick 61 in exchange for picks 54 and 63.{{Cite web|url=https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-10-16/blues-on-the-marc-pittonet-hawthorn-ruckman-joins-carlton|title=Blues make their Marc: Hawthorn ruckman joins Carlton|website=afl.com.au|language=en|access-date=2019-11-01}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.sen.com.au/news/2019/10/14/report-carlton-set-to-land-hawthorn-ruckman/|title=Report: Carlton set to land Hawthorn ruckman|website=www.sen.com.au|language=en|access-date=2019-11-01}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/2019-10-16/pittonet-joins-carlton-|title=Pittonet joins Carlton|website=carltonfc.com.au|language=en|access-date=2019-11-01}} Pittonet was initially intended to be a back-up to veteran Matthew Kreuzer, but after Kreuzer suffered a career-ending injury in Round 1, 2020,[https://www.afl.com.au/news/498576/big-blue-to-call-time-injuries-get-the-better-of-former-no-1-draft-pick AFL website announcement], 10 September 2020. he became the club's first choice ruckman, later forming a partnership with emerging ruckman Tom de Koning. Pittonet became well recognised as a high quality pure ruckman, and over multiple years, he recorded elite level numbers in hitouts to advantage and influence on clearances and stoppages; in contrast, a lack of mobility and weaker ball skills meant his influence around the ground and outside stoppages was below average.{{cite web|url=https://www.zerohanger.com/carlton-tall-ranks-no-1-as-afls-most-efficient-among-top-ruckmen-136328/|title=Carlton tall ranks No. 1 as AFL's most efficient among top ruckmen|author=Mitch Keating|date=3 May 2023|publisher=Zero Hanger|accessdate=2 September 2023}}{{cite web|url=https://www.theroar.com.au/2022/08/05/why-carlton-can-still-influence-the-finals-series/|title=Why Carlton can still influence the finals series|date=4 August 2022|author=Dem Panopoulos|publisher=The Roar}} Pittonet signed a four-year contract extension with Carlton in 2023, securing his position at the club until 2027.{{cite web|url=https://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/1338940/pittonet-pens-new-deal|title=Pittonet pens new deal|date=24 May 2023|publisher=Carlton Football Club|author=Carlton Media}}
