History

In 1887, the Chicago, Santa Fe, and California Railway, began construction on a rail line between Chicago and Kansas City, Kansas. It ran through southeast Linn County, prompting new towns such as Marceline. The completed line was absorbed into the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. The first land parcel in what became the town was sold in January 1888, and the town was incorporated two months later. By the end of the year, it had a railway roundhouse and yard.{{Cite book |title=Marceline, Missouri Past and Present Progress and Prosperity |publisher=Freeman Publishing Company}}

In March 1903, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway divided the line into two districts, with the Missouri district headquarters in Marceline.{{Cite book |title=Architectural Survey of Marceline |publisher=Missouri State Historic Preservation Office |year=2018}}

The town was named after Marcelina, the wife of a railroad man.{{cite web | url=http://shsmo.org/manuscripts/ramsay/ramsay_linn.html | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160624070628/http://shsmo.org/manuscripts/ramsay/ramsay_linn.html | archive-date=June 24, 2016 | url-status=dead | title=Linn County Place Names, 1928–1945 | publisher=The State Historical Society of Missouri | access-date=October 29, 2016 }} A post office called Marceline has operated since 1887.{{cite web | url=http://www.postalhistory.com/postoffices.asp?task=display&state=MO&county=Linn | title=Post Offices| publisher=Jim Forte Postal History | access-date=October 29, 2016}}
