Biography

Birck was born in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, on August 13, 1965. He is the nephew of both screenwriter and theater director Carlos Augusto de Campos Velho (better known as Jota Pingo) and film and television actor Paulo César Pereio,{{cite web|url=https://www.correiobraziliense.com.br/app/noticia/diversao-e-arte/2012/12/03/interna_diversao_arte,337038/cultura-de-brasilia-perde-um-dos-seus-principais-artistas-jota-pingo.shtml|title=Cultura de Brasília perde um dos seus principais artistas, Jota Pingo|work=Correio Braziliense|date=December 13, 2012|access-date=July 13, 2018|language=Portuguese}} and his mother, Rosa Maria de Campos Velho, was the director of the Teatro de Arena de Porto Alegre.{{cite web|url=http://www.jornalja.com.br/grupos-de-teatro-vao-ocupar-salas-do-hospital-sao-pedro/|title=Grupos de teatro vão ocupar salas do Hospital São Pedro|work=Jornal JÁ|date=October 10, 2005|access-date=July 13, 2018|language=Portuguese}} Having a penchant for music and arts since his youth, Birck later graduated in music from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, and then obtained a master's degree in music education at the Federal University of Goiás.

In 1983, alongside his younger brother Alexandre Birck, future TNT guitarist Luís "Tchê" Gomes and future Os Cascavelletes bassist Frank Jorge, Marcelo formed the short-lived band Prisão de Ventre, which lasted only for two years.{{cite web|url=http://cliquemusic.uol.com.br/materias/ver/graforreia-xilarmonica-os-desconhecidos-pioneiros|title=Graforreia Xilarmônica: os desconhecidos pioneiros|author=Silvio Essinger|date=April 2, 2001|access-date=November 24, 2017|language=Portuguese}}{{cite web|url=http://www.senhorf.com.br/agencia/main.jsp?codTexto=3217|title=Prisão de Ventre, a pré-Graforreia Xilarmônica, ainda nos anos oitenta|author=Fernando Rosa|access-date=November 24, 2017|language=Portuguese|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160303194120/http://www.senhorf.com.br/agencia/main.jsp?codTexto=3217|archive-date=March 3, 2016|url-status=dead|df=mdy-all}} In 1987, he reunited with his brother and Jorge to form, alongside Carlo Pianta, the cult band Graforreia Xilarmônica. After releasing two critically acclaimed albums, Coisa de Louco II (1995) and Chapinhas de Ouro (1998), they broke up in 2000, but reunited after a 5-year hiatus.

In 1988, Birck founded a more experimental and "performatic" side project to Graforreia Xilarmônica, named Aristóteles de Ananias Jr., alongside names such as Luciano Zanatta, Diego Silveira and Chico Machado. They have released a single, self-titled studio album in 1996 before disbanding the following year.[http://cliquemusic.uol.com.br/discos/ver/aristhoteles-de-ananias-jr Aristóteles de Ananias Jr.] {{in lang|pt}}

In 2000 Birck teamed up with Thomas Dreher and Felipe Faraco to form Os Atonais; their first (and so far only) studio album, Em Amplitude Moderada, came out the same year, amid overwhelmingly positive reviews.{{cite web |url=http://www.senhorf.com.br/agencia/main.jsp?codTexto=2006 |title=Senhor F |website=www.senhorf.com.br |access-date=13 January 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060913043642/http://www.senhorf.com.br/agencia/main.jsp?codTexto=2006 |archive-date=13 September 2006 |url-status=dead}}{{cite web |url=http://senhorf.com.br/agencia/main.jsp?codTexto=357 |title=Senhor F |website=senhorf.com.br |access-date=13 January 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090910102159/http://senhorf.com.br/agencia/main.jsp?codTexto=357 |archive-date=10 September 2009 |url-status=dead}} Later that year he released his first, self-titled solo album.{{cite web|url=https://www.last.fm/pt/user/bereteando/journal/2007/10/19/b8ng9_reciclando_uma_velha_entrevista_com_marcelo_birck|title=Reciclando uma velha entrevista com Marcelo Birck|work=Bereteando|date=October 19, 2007|access-date=July 13, 2018|language=Portuguese}}{{cite web|url=http://www.overmundo.com.br/overblog/tres-lados-para-cada-historia|title=Três lados de cada história|work=Overmundo|date=April 17, 2006|access-date=July 13, 2018|language=Portuguese}} A follow-up, Timbres Não Mentem Jamais, came out in 2008.{{cite web|url=http://noize.com.br/marcelo-birck-timbres-nao-mentem-jamais/|title=Marcelo Birck: Timbres Não Mentem Jamais|work=Noise|date=August 18, 2008|access-date=July 13, 2018|language=Portuguese}}

Birck has also collaborated with Jupiter Apple on his 1997 debut {{Lang|pt|A Sétima Efervescência}}, arranging one of the musician's most well-known songs, "Eu e Minha Ex". He later returned for its 1999 follow-up Plastic Soda. In 2009 he was a guest musician on Rogério Skylab's live album Skylab IX; he and Skylab (a huge fan of Birck) wrote together the song "Samba de uma Nota Só ao Contrário". From 2002 to 2003 he served as a lecturer of musical analysis for the Santa Catarina State University.
