Career and research
Violay completed her PhD at the Geoscience faculty of the Montpellier University{{Cite web|title=Géosciences Montpellier|url=http://www.gm.univ-montp2.fr/spip.php?page=pageperso&id_user=39&lang=fr|access-date=2021-02-11|website=www.gm.univ-montp2.fr|language=fr}} in 2010 with her thesis "High enthalpy hydro-geothermal reservoirs : insights from basalt petrophysical properties" (Réservoirs hydro-géothermaux haute enthalpie : apport des propriétés pétrophysiques des basaltes).{{Cite thesis|title=Réservoirs hydro-géothermaux haute enthalpie : apport des propriétés pétrophysiques des basaltes|url=https://www.theses.fr/2010MON20150|publisher=Montpellier 2|date=2010-12-03|degree=These de doctorat|first=Marie|last=Violay}} She then was a research assistant at National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome and at ETH Zurich.{{Cite journal|last1=Violay|first1=M.|last2=Nielsen|first2=S.|last3=Gibert|first3=B.|last4=Spagnuolo|first4=E.|last5=Cavallo|first5=A.|last6=Azais|first6=P.|last7=Vinciguerra|first7=S.|last8=Toro|first8=G. In 2015 she was appointed assistant professor and head of the Laboratory of Experimental Rock Mechanics at EPFL{{Cite web|title=14 nouveaux professeurs à l'ETH Zurich et à l'EPFL|url=https://www.news.admin.ch/fr/nsb?id=56474|access-date=2021-02-11|website=www.admin.ch}} and was awarded one of the seven Energy grant of the SNSF (Swiss National Science Foundation). These grants are aimed at promoting young scientists in the field of energy research.{{Cite journal|last=Verde|first=Mariachiara|date=2015-09-30|title=SNSF Assistant Professor Energy Grant awarded to Prof. Marie Violay|url=https://actu.epfl.ch/news/snsf-assistant-professor-energy-grant-awarded-to-2/|language=en}}
In 2017, Violay was awarded the ERC Starting Grant in the area of Earth System Science (Physical Sciences and Engineering domain). The grants are awarded under the "excellent science" pillar of Horizon 2020.{{Cite journal|date=2017-09-13|title=Prof. Marie Violay awarded with the ERC Starting Grant 2017!|url=https://actu.epfl.ch/news/prof-marie-violay-awarded-with-the-erc-starting-gr/|language=en}}
The focus of Violay’s research is to better understand the mechanical and physical processes in the first kilometers of the Earth’s crust. She brings better understanding on how fluids and rocks interact at these depths, which is crucial for the development of deep geothermal energy production. Understanding earthquake nucleation and propagation are other focuses of her work.{{Cite journal|last=Overney|first=Jan|date=2015-09-28|title=Marie Violay takes ENAC research deeper into the earth's crust|url=https://actu.epfl.ch/news/marie-violay-takes-enac-research-deeper-into-the-e/|language=en}} She has developed new approaches combining experimental deformation microstructural studies of the micro-scale processes, and modelling of these processes
for the study of earthquakes and geological reservoirs. She has reproduced seismic slip deformation conditions in the presence of pore fluids under controlled conditions, providing thus the experimental evidence of thermomechanical pressurisation of faults at seismic deformation conditions.{{Cite web|title=Marie Violay|url=https://www.egu.eu/awards-medals/division-outstanding-ecs-award/2017/marie-violay/|access-date=2021-02-11|website=European Geosciences Union (EGU)|language=en}}
