History
MarsEdit was originally developed by Brent Simmons{{cite web |last1=Simmons |first1=Brent |title=inessential: MarsEdit 1.0 ships! |url=https://inessential.com/2004/12/10/marsedit_1_0_ships |access-date=29 May 2022 |website=inessential.com}} as a component of NetNewsWire, a popular news aggregator for Mac OS X, which, in the 1.0 series, included a simple weblog editor. During the development of NetNewsWire 2.0, the developers decided to move the blog editor functionality to a new application.{{cite web |last1=Cohen |first1=Peter |title=Ranchero offers MarsEdit, NetNewsWire 2.0 beta |url=https://www.macworld.com/article/172474/ranchero.html |website=Macworld |access-date=29 May 2022}}{{Additional citation needed|date=February 2023}}
With the acquisition of NetNewsWire by NewsGator in 2005, the future of MarsEdit was uncertain for a time. Simmons considered abandoning the app, or open-sourcing it to let other developers work on it, but after a "strong reaction from users", he announced at the October 2005 DrunkenBlog conference that development would continue.{{Cite web |last=Ecker |first=Clint |date=2005-10-23 |title=MarsEdit to continue development |url=https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2005/10/1600/ |access-date=2023-02-19 |website=Ars Technica |language=en-us}} On November 4 of 2005, he revealed that MarsEdit development would be continued by Gus Mueller of Flying Meat.{{Cite web |last=Ecker |first=Clint |date=2005-11-05 |title=Gus Mueller to develop MarsEdit |url=https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2005/11/1728/ |access-date=2023-02-19 |website=Ars Technica |language=en-us}} In February 2007, MarsEdit was purchased by Red Sweater Software, and development was taken over by Red Sweater's owner, Daniel Jalkut.{{Cite web |last=Evans |first=Jonny |date=February 23, 2007 |title=MarsEdit blogging software in new hands |url=https://www.macworld.com/article/669108/marsedit-blogging-software-in-new-hands.html |access-date=2023-01-05 |website=Macworld |language=en}}{{Cite web |last=Cohen |first=Peter |date=February 21, 2007 |title=MarsEdit blogging software changes hands |url=https://www.macworld.com/article/183644/marsedit-2.html |access-date=2023-01-05 |website=Macworld |language=en}}{{cite web |title=Red Sweater Acquires MarsEdit Blogging Software |url=https://redsweater.com//press/MarsEditAcquisition.html |website=redsweater.com |access-date=29 May 2022}}
