Early life
He was born on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, MacDonald is the youngest of 12 children, and started to play cello when he was six years old.{{cite news|title=Conductor vying for Sudbury Symphony job comes from a family of car dealers|url=http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sudbury/sudbury-symphony-orchestra-conductor-martin-macdonald-1.3535373|work=CBC News|date=April 14, 2016|language=en}} He participated in the family's Celtic music band. He studied cello at Memorial University of Newfoundland and earned a master's degree in conducting at McGill University.
Career

Awards
