Mary Pikul Anderson is a hydrologist, geologist, and professor emerita of hydrogeology. She is a fellow of the Geological Society of America, the American Geophysical Union, and the National Academy of Engineering.

Early life and education

Anderson was born September 30, 1948, in Buffalo, New York.{{Cite web|title="Legendary" Mentor Follows the Groundwater|url=https://eos.org/features/legendary-mentor-follows-the-groundwater|access-date=2021-08-20|website=Eos|date=8 April 2019|language=en-US}} She received a B.A. degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1970.{{Cite web|title=Resume of Mary Pikul Anderson|url=http://www.geology.wisc.edu/homepages/andy/public_html/prof_bio.htm|access-date=2021-08-20|website=www.geology.wisc.edu|archive-date=2021-08-20|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210820020442/http://www.geology.wisc.edu/homepages/andy/public_html/prof_bio.htm|url-status=dead}} She earned an M.S. in 1971{{Cite thesis|title=Environmental survey of San Gregorio Valley, San Mateo County, California|url=https://www.worldcat.org/oclc/81602873|date=1971|language=English|first=Mary F|last=Pikul|oclc = 81602873}} and a PhD{{Cite thesis|title=Numerical studies of linked soil-moisture and groundwater systems|url=https://www.worldcat.org/oclc/5665668|date=1973|language=English|first=Mary Frances|last=Pikul| oclc=5665668 }} in 1973 from Stanford University. After a brief time at Southampton College of Long Island University, she joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1975 where she was promoted to professor in 1985.

Anderson was elected as a member into the National Academy of Engineering in 2006 for leadership in the development of groundwater-flow models.{{Cite web|title=Dr. Mary P. Anderson|url=https://nae.edu/28282/Dr-Mary-P-Anderson|access-date=2021-08-20|website=NAE Website}} Anderson also served as president of the Hydrology Section of the American Geophysical Union from 1996 until 1998, and was the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Groundwater from 2002 until 2005.

Research

Anderson's research involves groundwater–lake interaction and application of computer models.

She is co-author of two textbooks including Introduction to Groundwater Modeling{{Cite book|last1=Wang|first1=Herbert|first2=Mary P.|last2=Anderson|url=https://www.worldcat.org/oclc/782873727|title=Introduction to groundwater modeling : finite difference and finite element methods|date=1995|publisher=Academic Press|isbn=978-0-08-057194-2|location=San Diego|oclc=782873727}} and Applied Groundwater Modeling, now in a 2nd edition (2015).{{Cite book|last=Anderson|first=Mary P.|url=https://www.worldcat.org/oclc/914472583|title=Applied groundwater modeling : simulation of flow and advective transport|date=2015|others=William W.
