{{nihongo|Masashi Oiso|大礒 正嗣}} is a Japanese Magic: The Gathering player. He is one of the most successful players to have played on the Pro Tour, being one of only seven players to have reached the top eight six times. Along with Kenji Tsumura, he is the player with the most top eights to have never won a Pro Tour. In 2012 Oiso was voted into the Magic: The Gathering Hall of Fame. His induction was conducted at Pro Tour Return to Ravnica in October 2012.
Career
Oiso's career began in the 2002–03 season at Pro Tour Boston as part of Hato Beeam with teammates Takao Higaki and Kazuki Ueno. They finished with a record of 6 wins and 5 losses{{cite web | title = Round 11 Standings | publisher = Wizards of the Coast | date = 28 September 2002 | accessdate = 13 August 2009 | url = http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=sideboard/ptbos02/stand11| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20090602151034/https://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=sideboard/ptbos02/stand11| url-status = dead| archive-date = June 2, 2009}} which left them in 26th place, and just one win short of winning money.{{cite web | title = 2002 Pro Tour Boston Final Standings | date = 29 September 2002 | accessdate = 13 August 2009 | publisher = Wizards of the Coast | url = http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=sideboard/ptbos02/finstand| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20090602151215/https://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=sideboard/ptbos02/finstand| url-status = dead| archive-date = June 2, 2009}} Oiso's breakout performance came later the same season in his home country. At Pro Tour Yokohama, he reached the top eight for the first time. He made it all the way to final, beating José Barbero and Tsuyoshi Ikeda, before losing to Mattias Jorstedt.{{cite web | title = Live Coverage of 2003 Pro Tour Yokohama | date = 11 May 2003 |accessdate = 13 August 2009 |publisher = Wizards of the Coast | url = http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=sideboard/events/ptyok03| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20081011012030/http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=sideboard/events/ptyok03| url-status = dead| archive-date = October 11, 2008}} It would also be the only time that he would make it past the quarterfinals. This finals appearance, along with a pair of Grand Prix top eights, was enough to earn him the title of Rookie of the Year.
The following season, Oiso proved that the year before was no fluke with Pro Tour top eights in New Orleans{{cite web | title = Live Coverage of 2003 Pro Tour New Orleans | date = 2 November 2003 | accessdate = 13 August 2009 | publisher = Wizards of the Coast | url = http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=sideboard/events/ptno03| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20031206065138/http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=sideboard/events/ptno03| url-status = dead| archive-date = December 6, 2003}} and San Diego.{{cite web | title = Live Coverage of 2004 Pro Tour San Diego| date = 16 May 2004 | accessdate = 13 August 2009 | publisher = Wizards of the Coast | url = http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Events.aspx?x=mtgevent/ptsd04/welcome| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20081011013100/http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Events.aspx?x=mtgevent/ptsd04/welcome| url-status = dead| archive-date = October 11, 2008}} With 46 Pro Points that season, he finished 17th in the Player of the year race.{{cite web | title = 2004 World Championships Feature | date = 5 September 2004 | accessdate = 13 August 2009 | publisher = Wizards of the Coast | url = http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Events.aspx?x=mtgevent/worlds04/potystand| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20090602031652/https://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Events.aspx?x=mtgevent/worlds04/potystand| url-status = dead| archive-date = June 2, 2009}}
The 2005 season was Oiso's strongest yet. After the end of the 2005 season, Oiso began to slow down. In 2006, he didn't play every Pro Tour and earned only eighteen pro points, the minimum required to stay qualified.{{cite web|title=2006 Player of the Year Race|date=2006-12-13|accessdate=2009-08-13|publisher=Wizards of the Coast|url=http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/Events.aspx?x=protour/standings/poy06|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121025181814/http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/Events.aspx?x=protour/standings/poy06|url-status=dead|archive-date=October 25, 2012}} However, when the Pro Tour came to Japan the following year, he showed the world that he was still good. At Pro Tour Yokohama, he reached the top eight for the sixth time.{{cite web|title=Wafo-Tapa Tops Them All! |date=2007-04-22 |accessdate=2009-08-13 |publisher=Wizards of the Coast |url=http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Events.aspx?x=mtgevent/ptyok07/welcome |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20081002114331/http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Events.aspx?x=mtgevent%2Fptyok07%2Fwelcome |archivedate=2008-10-02 |url-status=dead }} That top eight is regarded as one of the best in quite some time, with every player either having reached top eight before or reaching it again by the end of the next season. Oiso has had no significant finishes on the Pro Tour since.
