"Masochistic Beauty" is a song by American soul singer Marvin Gaye, released posthumously in 1985 by Columbia Records.

Background

Unlike the majority of Gaye's music, the song is a dedication to S&M, which was something that Gaye was known to have an interest in. The lyrics find Gaye playing the role of a Dom in a faux-English Received Pronunciation accent where he raps throughout the track. The song shares some similarities to "Sanctified Lady", receiving vocoder work from Gordon Banks, and having an electro-funk flavor. Both controversial tracks were also unfinished outtakes from the Midnight Love sessions, which received later work from Gordon Banks, and were released on the posthumous Dream of a Lifetime album.{{cite magazine|url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-album-reviews/dream-of-a-lifetime-205174/|title=Dream Of A Lifetime|first1=Robert|last1=Seidenberg|magazine=Rolling Stone |date=4 July 1985|publisher=}}{{cite web|url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1985-04-28-8501250764-story.html|title=HOW SWEET IT WASN'T: THE TORTURED LIFE AND 'DIVIDED SOUL' OF MARVIN GAYE|first=Lynn|last=Van Matre|website=chicagotribune.com|date=28 April 1985 }}{{cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1985/05/12/arts/for-marvin-gaye-life-through-song-goes-on.html|title=For Marvin Gaye, Life - Through Song - Goes On|first=Jon|last=Pareles|newspaper=The New York Times |date=12 May 1985|publisher=}}{{cite web|url=https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1985-05-31-8501220253-story.html|title=GAYE ALBUM A MISHMASH; QUEEN SOUND IS BACK|first=James Henke, Rolling|last=Stone|website=Sun-Sentinel.com|date=31 May 1985 }}
