}}Mathias Abel (born 22 June 1981) is a German retired footballer who played as a defender.

Football career

Abel was born in Kaiserslautern, Rhineland-Palatinate. After starting with amateurs Eintracht Bad Kreuznach and having a spell with Borussia Dortmund's reserves, he joined 1. FSV Mainz 05 in 2002, helping the club promote from the second division in his second year with 18 matches.{{cite web |title=Mathias Abel » Club matches |url=https://www.worldfootball.net/player_summary/mathias-abel/2/ |publisher=World Football |access-date=28 July 2023}}

Abel made his Bundesliga debut on 14 August 2004, in a 2–1 home win over Hamburger SV. He scored three goals during the season, as his team maintained its status.

From 2006 onwards, Abel would appear sparingly for several clubs: FC Schalke 04 – which also loaned him for five months to Hamburg – and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, appearing almost exclusively for the latter's B-side during two years. This was mainly due to two consecutive anterior cruciate ligament injuries (in early 2004, he suffered the same injury while at Mainz, being sidelined for six months).{{cite news|url=https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/01c5-0e6e6f34ee94-bfe1575bc446-1000--abel-unable-to-play-for-schalke/ |title=Abel unable to play for Schalke |publisher=UEFA |date=13 September 2007 |access-date=9 January 2010 |archive-date=25 October 2012 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121025234053/http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/newsid%3D585667.html |url-status=live }}{{cite news|date=17 September 2007 |url=https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/01c5-0e6e85fc814d-4cad1cd8df7e-1000--schalke-out-to-make-amends/ |title=Schalke out to make amends |publisher=UEFA |first=Alois |last=Urban |access-date=5 December 2010 |archive-date=26 October 2012 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121026023953/http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/newsid%3D586653.html |url-status=live }}

Abel's first appearance for Kaiserslautern's first team only took place on 26 October 2010, as an early substitute in a 3–0 home win against Arminia Bielefeld for the campaign's German Cup. Four days later, he managed to play the full 90 minutes in the league fixture against Borussia Mönchengladbach (same venue and result).

In February 2013 Abel was linked with China League One team Beijing Baxy FC,{{cite web|url=http://www.bjbaxyfc.net/ShowDetail.asp?id=638|archive-url=https://archive.today/20130423101114/http://www.bjbaxyfc.net/ShowDetail.asp?id=638|url-status=dead|archive-date=23 April 2013|script-title=zh:新赛季八喜内外援基本确定|publisher=Beijing Baxy F.C|language=Chinese|date=18 February 2013|accessdate=20 February 2013}} but nothing came of it. After his contract with Lautern expired in the summer, he went on trial with Brunei DPMM FC of the S.League.{{cite web|url=http://www.goal.com/en-my/news/3960/asia/2013/11/22/4422233/brunei-dpmm-fc-to-trial-a-global-list-of-stars |title=Brunei DPMM FC to trial a global list of stars |publisher=Goal.com |date=22 November 2013 |accessdate=26 November 2013 |archivedate=29 December 2013 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20131229005944/http://www.goal.com/en-my/news/3960/asia/2013/11/22/4422233/brunei-dpmm-fc-to-trial-a-global-list-of-stars |url-status=live }}
