Early life and education

Brewer was born in Oklahoma City, however he grew up Albuquerque, New Mexico. Being that both his father and grandfather were jazz musicians and that his mother was a radio DJ, he was surrounded by music from an early age. Brewer started out playing the drums at age three, however, at the age of ten, when attended an Interlochen Center for the Arts summer program, he switched to bass.

Brewer attended Interlochen Arts Academy High School, and went on to pursue music in college as a student of the Juilliard Jazz Program's inaugural class.

Career

In 2001, Brewer moved to New York to start his music career. He has frequented as a guest lecturer at Banff Centre and currently is an adjunct faculty member at The New School and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. During his career as a jazz musician, he has played with many artists, including Dave Binney, Gerald Clayton, Steve Coleman, Vijay Iyer, Vic Juris, Lee Konitz, Steve Lehman, Lage Lund, Ben Monder, Greg Osby, Aaron Parks, Adam Rogers, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Antonio Sánchez, Mark Turner, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Ben Wendel, and Dhafer Youssef, among others.{{Cite web |title=SFJAZZ Collective Spotlight: Matt Brewer |url=https://www.sfjazz.org/athome/sfjazz-collective-spotlight/matt-brewer/ |access-date=2025-05-26 |website=www.sfjazz.org}}

Brewer has recorded three albums as leader. His 2019 trio album, Ganymede, was recorded for the Criss Cross label.
