Matteo Botteri, (1808 – 1877) also known as Matija Botteri, was a botanist, ornithologist, and collector.

Biography

Botteri was born on the island Hvar{{harvp|Durbešić|2011|p=33}} to an Italian family.{{citation needed|date=February 2023|reason=In a source he was referred to as Italian, but further verification is warranted.}} He began his early career in Dalmatia and nearby areas in the Ottoman Empire{{harvp|Hooker|1853|p=221}} with flora and fauna, primarily ichthyologist investigations, while headquartered in Hvar.{{harvp|Durbešić|2011|p=30}} He, along with his contemporary {{ill|Grgur Bučić|hr}}, sent materials to Georg von Frauenfeld for his studies.{{harvp|Durbešić|2011|p=58}} He also sent material to Friedrich Kützing. In 1854, he travelled to Mexico to collect plants on behalf of the Royal Horticultural Society.{{harvp|Hughey|Gabrielson|Maggs|Mineur|2021|p=145}} He settled in Orizaba, where he founded a museum{{harvp|Beolens|2014|p=83}} and became professor of languages and natural history at Orizaba College.{{harvp|Dulčić|2010|p=110}}

Philip Sclater commemorated him in the name of the Botteri's sparrow, which Botteri collected as well as other birds in Veracruz in 1857.{{harvp|Harper|1930|p=177}}{{harvp|Fischer|2001|p=139}} He amassed a collection of 120 unique bird species in the vicinity of Orizaba,{{harvp|Sclater|1857|p=211}} including areas such as Tuxpango, Tehuipango.{{harvp|Loetscher|Gullion|Montgomery|Fisher|Young|Sibley|Childs|Mossman|Dixon|Stoner|Wooten|1952|p=204}} His keeping of slaty vireo brought attention as its green color stood out among its genus.{{harvp|Miller|Ray|1944|p=41}}

He died in Orizaba in 1877.
