He is currently the CEO Emeryville, California-based MycoWorks, a biomaterials company making leathers from fungal mycelium.{{Cite web|url = https://www.vogue.com/article/reishi-launch-vegan-sustainable-faux-leather-alternative|title = Leather's Carbon Footprint Is Immense, But This Plant-Based Alternative Could Be the Way Forward|date = 5 February 2020|accessdate = 7 April 2020|website = Vogue|publisher = Conde Nast|last = Farra|first = Emily}} Previously, he was CEO of Alphabet Energy, which he co-founded in 2008 with Peidong Yang. Alphabet Energy was the leader in commercial thermoelectric waste heat recovery systems,[https://web.archive.org/web/20100825161038/http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/08/100823-energy-electric-power-from-heat/ Tapping into the Electric Power of Heat] having been named a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum{{Cite web|url=http://www.weforum.org/community/technology-pioneers|title = Technology Pioneers}} in 2013 when Scullin was recognized in Davos.[https://techcrunch.com/2011/02/01/alphabet-energy-pilots/ Alphabet Energy's Waste-Heat Recovery Tech Is Out Of The Lab, Pilot Projects Underway | TechCrunch]

Scullin was born and raised in the Alphabet City neighborhood of Manhattan, where he attended the United Nations International School. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania magna cum laude, where he won the R.M. Brick Award in Materials Science,[http://2011showcase.lbl.gov/speakers.html Berkeley Lab Energy Showcase] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140529052810/http://2011showcase.lbl.gov/speakers.html |date=2014-05-29 }} and then went on to complete his Ph.D. in Materials Science at the University of California, Berkeley with advisers Ramamoorthy Ramesh and Arun Majumdar. He has lectured about cleantech and entrepreneurship at the Kellogg School of Management, Haas School of Business, HEC Paris, University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Most of Scullin's work relates to ideas in microstructures of materials, crystallography, and symmetry, and how engineering these allows for novel properties in materials. In 2007 Scullin collaborated with architects Aranda\Lasch on a commissioned piece entitled "Rules of Six" for the exhibit Design and the Elastic Mind at the MoMA in New York.[http://www.moma.org/explore/multimedia/audios/37/831 MoMA | Aranda/Lasch and Matthew L.
