Personal life
Woodward served as a sergeant in the Football Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment during the First World War.{{Cite web |title=Leicester Fosse And The First World War: Part 21 |url=http://www.lcfc.com/news/article/leicester-fosse-and-the-first-world-war-part-21-2472399.aspx |access-date=16 December 2015 |website=www.lcfc.com}} He suffered a knee injury and from sciatica during the war. He later became a publican in Wall Heath.
