Mauro Santambrogio (born 7 October 1984 in Erba) is a former Italian professional road racing cyclist, who last rode for UCI Continental team {{UCI team code|AMO|2015}}.
Career
Until 2009, Santambrogio rode for {{UCI team code|LAM|2009}}, and after the 2009 season he changed to {{UCI team code|BMC|2010}}. In 2010, he was mentioned in the Mantova doping investigation, and was sidelined for a few days by his team; he was again sidelined in 2011 when new evidence showed up.
After leaving BMC at the end of the 2012 season, Santambrogio joined {{UCI team code|FAR|2013}}. He made an excellent start to the season, including finishing 6th overall in Tour de San Luis, 7th overall in Tirreno–Adriatico and winning the GP Industria & Artigianato di Larciano in pouring rain. He was clear of the group with Patrik Sinkewitz, when Sinkewitz crashed at a right turn with {{convert|2|km|abbr=on}} to go. Santambrogio then soloed his way to victory.{{cite news|url=http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/gp-industria-and-artigianato-larciano-2013/results|title=Santambrogio wins GP Industria & Artigianato — Larciano|website=Cyclingnews.com|date=27 April 2013|accessdate=28 April 2013}} Santambrogio then finished 2nd overall in Giro del Trentino. At the Giro d'Italia, Santambrogio won Stage 14 after attacking with race leader Vincenzo Nibali, to rise to fourth overall, and just one second off the final podium place occupied by Rigoberto Urán. However, Santambrogio's form collapsed and he eventually finished 9th overall. Santambrogio's surprising performances had caused rumours amongst the peloton of doping from early in the race.{{cite web|url=http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/santambrogio-suspended-by-uci-for-epo-positive|title=Santambrogio suspended by UCI for EPO positive|work=Cyclingnews.com|date=3 June 2013|publisher=}}
=Doping=
On 3 June 2013, it was announced that Santambrogio had tested positive for erythropoietin (EPO) after the first stage of the 2013 Giro d'Italia. This came just a few weeks after teammate Danilo Di Luca was thrown out of the Giro for testing positive for the same substance.{{cite news|title=Santambrogio is Vini Fantini's second Giro EPO positive|url=http://velonews.competitor.com/2013/06/news/santambrogio-is-vini-fantinis-second-giro-epo-positive_289518|work=VeloNews|accessdate=3 June 2013|date=3 June 2013}}{{cite news|title=Italian rider Mauro Santambrogio tests positive for EPO|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/22754082|publisher=BBC Sport|accessdate=3 June 2013|date=3 June 2013}} Santambrogio was also sacked by the team.{{cite news|url=http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/pelotons-reactions-to-dopers-a-rebellion-acquarone-says|title=Peloton's reactions to dopers a rebellion, Acquarone says|website=Cyclingnews.com|date=3 June 2013|accessdate=3 June 2013|quote=Vini Fantini manager Angelo Citracca vowed to continue the team, however, stating that they have fired Santambrogio, and following any disciplinary action, they may seek damages.}} Santambrogio was suspended by the UCI until 2 November 2014.{{cite web|url=http://www.uci.ch/Modules/BUILTIN/getObject.asp?MenuId%3DMTU3Mjg%26ObjTypeCode%3DFILE%26type%3DFILE%26id%3DNzk5OTY%26LangId%3D1 |title=Archived copy |accessdate=2014-07-12 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140715214800/http://www.uci.ch/Modules/BUILTIN/getObject.asp?MenuId=MTU3Mjg&ObjTypeCode=FILE&type=FILE&id=Nzk5OTY&LangId=1 |archivedate=15 July 2014 }}
On 22 October 2014, Santambrogio tested positive for testosterone and was suspended for three years.{{Cite web|url=http://www.uci.ch/mm/Document/News/CleanSport/16/72/78/20141218ProvisionalSuspensionEN2.0_English.pdf|title = Home}}{{cite web|url=http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/santambrogio-tests-positive-for-testosterone-during-epo-ban|title=Santambrogio tests positive for testosterone during EPO ban|work=Cyclingnews.com|date=18 December 2014|publisher=}} Santambrogio said he would not seek to return once his suspension has been served.{{cite web|url=http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest-news/mauro-santambrogio-receives-three-year-ban-for-2014-positive-197080|title=Mauro Santambrogio receives three-year ban for 2014 positive test - Cycling Weekly|date=27 October 2015|publisher=}}
