Meatpaper was an American magazine devoted to meat that was published between 2006 and 2013. The publication covered the ethics, aesthetics, and cultural significance of meat, and is more akin to an art journal than a usual food and drink magazine.
History
Published quarterly, it was founded in 2006 by Sasha Wizansky and Amy Standen, who (in addition to both being former vegetarians) met while working at Salon.com.{{cite news |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/19/dining/19meat.html?_r=1&ref=dining |title=Meat to Wrap the Mind Around |last=Schwaner-Albright |first=Oliver |newspaper=The New York Times |date=December 19, 2007 }}
In addition to the magazine itself, Meatpaper has organized events, such as a series of seminars on raising domestic rabbits for food.{{cite news|last=Severson|first=Kim|title=Don't Tell the Kids|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/03/dining/03rabbit.html|newspaper=The New York Times|date=March 2, 2010}} In 2007, it was named among the best magazines of the year by Library Journal, which called it "unique, brash, and provocative".{{cite news|last=Black|first=Steven|title=Best Magazines of 2007|url=http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6551180.html|newspaper=Library Journal|date=May 1, 2008|access-date=May 26, 2011|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110607123115/http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6551180.html|archive-date=June 7, 2011|url-status=dead}} In 2010, Good included it in their list of the eight food magazines you should read now.{{cite web |url=http://www.good.is/post/the-eight-food-magazines-you-should-read-now/page:4#slideshow_48247 |title=The Eight Food Magazines You Should Read Now |date=August 23, 2010 |work=Good }}
In August 2013, Meatpaper cofounder Wizansky announced that the magazine's 20th issue would be its final printing,{{citation |url=http://insidescoopsf.sfgate.com/blog/2013/08/26/meatpapers-sasha-wizansky-on-the-magazines-final-issue-and-its-legacy/ |title=Meatpaper's Sasha Wizansky on the magazine's final issue and its legacy |work=Inside Scoop |publisher=San Francisco Chronicle |date=August 26, 2013 }} but that back issues would still be available for purchase.{{citation |url=http://meatpaper.com/wordpress/2013/08/the-future-of-meat-and-the-future-of-meatpaper/ |title=The Future of Meat - And The Future of Meatpaper |publisher=Meatpaper |date=August 23, 2013 }}
Content and editorial stance
Unlike many traditional food magazines, Meatpaper's content is not primarily directed at publishing recipes,{{cite news |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/14/AR2008041402399.html |newspaper=The Washington Post |last=Carlson |first=Peter |date=April 15, 2008 |title=A Choice Quarterly That's Well Done, and Rare }} but discusses the politics and ethics of food, along with essays and reporting on how it is prepared and consumed. In addition to editorial content, it is known for art, including original illustrations, paintings, and photographs.
The magazine intentionally does not take a particular stance that is for or against eating meat,{{cite news |url=http://www.utne.com/Media/Meatpaper-magazine-interview-Sasha-Wizansky-6937.aspx |title=What is Meatpaper? |work=Utne Reader |date=March 23, 2010 |last=Guntzel |first=Jeff Severns }} but rather discusses it as a cultural phenomenon. Issues have included topics such as an interview with the creator of the meat dress of Lady Gaga,{{cite web |url=http://6thfloor.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/14/the-new-issue-of-meatpaper-is-out/ |title=The New Issue of Meatpaper Is Out! |work=The 6th Floor |publisher=The New York Times Company |date=March 14, 2011 }} and a discussion of beef heart by famously offal-loving chef Chris Cosentino.
