Medetera is a large genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae.{{cite book|last1=Yang|first1=D.|last2=Zhu|first2=Y.|last3=Wang|first3=M.|last4=Zhang|first4=L.|title=World Catalog of Dolichopodidae (Insecta: Diptera).|date=2006|publisher=China Agricultural University Press|location=Beijing|isbn=9787811171020|pages=1–704}}{{cite journal|first1=O.P.|last1=Negrobov|first2=S.|last2=Naglis|year=2016|title=Palaearctic species of the genus Medetera (Diptera: Dolichopodidae)|url=https://www.zin.ru/journals/zsr/content/2016/zr_2016_25_2_Negrobov.pdf|journal=Zoosystematica Rossica|volume=25|issue=2|pages=333–379|doi=10.31610/zsr/2016.25.2.333}} It includes about 350 species worldwide.{{cite journal|last1=Grichanov|first1=I.Ya.|last2=Ahmadi|first2=A.|year=2017|title=A new species of Medetera Fischer von Waldheim, 1819 (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) from Iran|journal=Far Eastern Entomologist|volume=339|pages=12–15|doi=10.25221/fee.339.2|doi-access=free}} The adults are commonly found resting on vertical surfaces such as tree trunks, on which they have a characteristic vertical upright stance. Because of this stance, they are sometimes known as "woodpecker flies". Medetera adults are predators of soft-bodied arthropods, while the larvae are predators of bark beetle larvae.{{cite journal|last1=Bickel|first1=Daniel J.|title=A revision of the Oriental and Australian Medetera (Diptera: Dolichopodidae).|journal=Records of the Australian Museum|date=1987|volume=39|issue=4|pages=195–259|url=http://australianmuseum.net.au/uploads/journals/17676/170_complete.pdf|access-date=22 December 2016|publisher=Australian Museum|location=Sydney|issn=0067-1975|doi=10.3853/j.0067-1975.39.1987.170|archive-date=12 May 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170512185332/https://australianmuseum.net.au/uploads/journals/17676/170_complete.pdf|url-status=dead}}{{cite journal|last1=Bickel|first1=D.
