Medinyà is a town in the comarca of Gironès in Catalonia.{{cite web |url=http://www.elpuntavui.cat/noticia/article/3-politica/17-politica/863740-medinya-ja-es-el-municipi-222.html |title=Medinyà ja és el municipi 222 |author=Jordi Nadal|publisher=El Punt Avui |date=2005-06-05|language=Catalan|accessdate=2015-10-04}} Between June 2015 and January 2018 it was an independent municipality, but has now reverted to forming part of the municipality of Sant Julià de Ramis. The town is located at the junction of the N-II and the GI-514 roads. In 2014 it consisted of 852 residents.{{cite web |url=http://www.vilaweb.cat/noticia/4353005/20150604/medinya-sindependitza-sant-julia-ramis.html |title=Medinyà s'independitza de Sant Julià de Ramis |publisher=VilaWeb|language=Catalan|date=2015-06-04|accessdate=2015-10-04}} A highlight of the town is Medinyà Castle.

History

The first recorded mention of the town is in 1017, in correspondence from Pope Benedict VIII to the monastery at Banyoles. The documents lists the municipalities controlled by the monastery.{{cite web|url = http://medinya.blogspot.com.es/2008/11/introducci-la-historia.html|title = Medinyà en Xarxa - Introducció a la història|date = 2008-11-29|accessdate=2015-10-04}}

The writer Hans Christian Andersen mentioned the town in his 1862 travel book "I Spanien" (In Spain).{{cite web|url=http://www.firadelconte.cat/la-historia-de-la-fira|title=Història de la Fira|publisher=Medinyà Story Fair|accessdate=2015-10-04}}

In 1972 the town ceased being an independent municipality and was absorbed into Sant Julià de Ramis.

On 4 June 2015 the municipal independence of Medinyà was recognised and it recovered its original territory, which includes the villages of Santa Fe de la Serra, Tomet, Lladrers and Vall-llobera.{{cite web|url = http://www.diaridegirona.cat/comarques/2015/06/04/medinya-independent/728265.html|title = El Parlament aprova la independència de Medinyà|date=2015-06-04|publisher=Diari de Girona|language=Catalan|accessdate=2015-10-04}}

In September 2017, the Spanish Constitutional Court declared the creation of the municipality unconstitutional due to insufficient population, as requested by the Spanish Government of Mariano Rajoy.{{cite web|url=https://cat.elpais.com/cat/2018/02/01/catalunya/1517497328_466858.html|title=Medinyà perd la independència per ordre del Tribunal Constitucional|author=Marta Rodríguez|publisher=El País|date=1 February 2018|accessdate=2018-02-08}}{{Cite web|url=http://hj.tribunalconstitucional.es/docs/BOE/BOE-A-2017-11749.pdf|title=Sentencia 108/2017, de 21 de septiembre de 2017, del Tribunal Constitucional, en relación al Recurso de inconstitucionalidad 1401-2016|website=Boletín Oficial del Estado|access-date=2017-10-17}} The Catalan government at the time disputed the judgement and said they would continue to recognise Medinyà, but following the takeover of government by the Spanish state it was confirmed that the reversion would be enforced.{{cite web|url=http://www.ccma.cat/324/medinya-forcat-a-desapareixer-com-a-municipi-en-plena-aplicacio-del-155/noticia/2824097/|title=Medinyà, forçat a desaparèixer com a municipi en plena aplicació del 155|publisher=TV3|date=30 November 2017|accessdate=2018-02-08}}
