Background

In 1971, the British Hong Kong Government cleared Tung Wo Village and Chiu Ping New Village in Tung Tau Squatter Area. In 1974, one block of the estate, "Block 6", was constructed. The government planned to demolish nearby Sai Tau Village in Kowloon City to construct remaining blocks, but the plan was strongly opposed by the village residents. As a result, the plan was left aside. (Sai Tau Village was finally demolished in 1984 to build the current Carpenter Road Park.) Since no other blocks were built, "Block 6" was renamed as "Mei Tung House" in 1979. In 1981, the government decided to construct one more block on the left side of Mei Tung House. In 1983, the block, "Mei Po House", was completed.{{Cite web|url=https://www.hk-place.com/view.php?id=207 |title=Hong Kong Place: Mei Tung Estate (Chinese)|access-date=17 July 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080915185151/http://www.hk-place.com/view.php?id=207|archive-date=15 September 2008|url-status=dead}} As of 2022 via Google Street View,{{Cite web|url=https://www.google.com/maps/@22.3330919,114.1904628,3a,75y,281.06h,83.37t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sVj_tjEq17gWXlCfURtSXgg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en|title=Portions of Mei Tung House and Mei Po House demolished from Google Street View as archived on November 2022|access-date=13 April 2023}} Mei Tung House and Mei Po House portions of the Mei Tung Estate were demolished and now under redevelopment by Hong Kong Housing Authority for new public housing project.{{Cite web|url=https://www.pland.gov.hk/pland_en/access/pec/planning_brief/PB%20for%20Mei%20Tung%20Est.%20(Older%20Part).pdf|title=Redevelopment of Mei Tung Estate (Older Part)|access-date=13 April 2023}}
