Meilen–Rorenhaab is one of the 111 serial sites of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps, of which 56 are located in Switzerland.{{cite web|url=http://www.palafittes.org/en/unesco-world-heritage/sites-switzerland/index.html|title=Prehistoric Pile Dwellings in Switzerland|publisher=Swiss Coordination Group UNESCO Palafittes (palafittes.org)|author=|language=|date=|accessdate=2014-12-10|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20141007220441/http://www.palafittes.org/en/unesco-world-heritage/sites-switzerland/index.html|archivedate=2014-10-07|df=}}{{cite web|url=http://www.palafittes.org/en/unesco-world-heritage/world-heritage/index.html|title=World Heritage|publisher=palafittes.org|author=|language=|date=|accessdate=2014-12-10|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20141209212026/http://www.palafittes.org/en/unesco-world-heritage/world-heritage/index.html|archivedate=2014-12-09|df=}}

Geography

The site is located on Lake Zurich {Zürichsee) lakeshore in Rohrenhaab, a locality of the municipality of Meilen in the Canton of Zürich in Switzerland. Because the lake has grown in size over time, the original piles are now around {{convert|4|m|ft|0}} to {{convert|7|m|ft|0}} below the water level of {{convert|406|m|ft|0}}. The settlement comprises {{convert|0.7|ha|acre|2}}, and the buffer zone including the lake area comprises {{convert|4.8|ha|acre|2}} in all. During the winter of 1853–54, in the context of lowered water levels at the lake, archaeologist Ferdinand Keller discovered the remains of the site.{{cite journal|first=Ferdinand|last=Keller|title=Die keltischen Pfahlbauten in den Schweizerseen|volume=1|journal=Mittheilungen der Antiquarischen Gesellschaft in Zürich|year=1854}}{{Cite Nuttall|title=Keller, Ferdinand}}

Description

As mentioned, this site was the starting point of pile-dwelling research and therefore interesting from the point of view of research history. It is one of several sites in a small area illustrating the typical settlement dynamics of a micro-region during the Neolithic. All periods are represented here, usually with several settlement phases, but particularly from the Early Bronze Age interesting are numerous dendrochronological dates, which allow to study the development of this period.{{cite web|url=http://www.palafittes.org/en/unesco-world-heritage/sites-switzerland/index.html|title=Sites Switzerland: Meilen–Rorenhaab (CH-ZH-06)|publisher=palafittes.org|author=|language=|date=|accessdate=2014-12-10|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20141007220441/http://www.palafittes.org/en/unesco-world-heritage/sites-switzerland/index.html|archivedate=2014-10-07|df=}}

Protection

As well as being part of the 56 Swiss sites of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps, the settlement is also listed in the Swiss inventory of cultural property of national and regional significance as a Class A object of national importance.{{cite web|url=http://www.bevoelkerungsschutz.admin.ch/internet/bs/de/home/themen/kgs/kgs_inventar/a-objekte.parsys.000108.DownloadFile.tmp/zh2015.pdf |title=A-Objekte KGS-Inventar |publisher=Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft, Amt für Bevölkerungsschutz |author= |language= |date=2015-01-01 |accessdate=2015-09-13 |url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20151001193946/http://www.bevoelkerungsschutz.admin.ch/internet/bs/de/home/themen/kgs/kgs_inventar/a-objekte.parsys.000108.DownloadFile.tmp/zh2015.pdf |archivedate=2015-10-01 |df= }} Hence, the area is provided as a historical site under federal protection, within the meaning of the Swiss Federal Act on the nature and cultural heritage (German: Bundesgesetz über den Natur- und Heimatschutz NHG) of 1 July 1966. Unauthorised researching and purposeful gathering of findings represent a criminal offense according to Art. 24.{{cite web|url=http://www.admin.ch/ch/d/sr/4/451.de.pdf|title=Bundesgesetz über den Natur- und Heimatschutz (NHG)|publisher=Hochbaudepartement Stadt Zürich|author=|language=German|date=2014-10-12|accessdate=2015-08-21}}
