It was also at one time built by SOCA Sailboats of Laventille, Trinidad and Tobago.{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/builder/melges-performance-sailboats|title= Melges Performance Sailboats|access-date = 17 September 2022|last= McArthur| first = Bruce |work = sailboatdata.com|year = 2021|archive-url= https://archive.today/20200908184850/https://sailboatdata.com/builder/melges-performance-sailboats|archive-date= 8 September 2020|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboat.guide/melges|title= Melges Performance Sailboats|access-date= 17 September 2022|author= Sea Time Tech, LLC|work= sailboat.guide|year= 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20220914224725/https://sailboat.guide/melges|archive-date= 14 September 2022|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/builder/soca-sailboats-ltd|title= SOCA Sailboats Ltd. 1996 - 2015 |access-date = 17 September 2022|last= McArthur| first = Bruce |work = sailboatdata.com|year = 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20220916235706/https://sailboatdata.com/builder/soca-sailboats-ltd|archive-date= 16 September 2022|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboat.guide/soca|title= SOCA Sailboats Ltd.|access-date= 17 September 2022|author= Sea Time Tech, LLC|work= sailboat.guide|year= 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20220916235741/https://sailboat.guide/soca|archive-date= 16 September 2022|url-status= live}}
Design
The Melges 32 is a racing keelboat, built predominantly of composite material. It has a 7/8 fractional sloop rig with dual swept spreaders, a keel-stepped mast and carbon fiber spars. The hull is built from fiberglass reinforced epoxy and a PVC fiberglass epoxy sandwich. The hull has a nearly-plumb stem, an open reverse transom, an internally mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a tiller and a retractable carbon fiber lifting keel with a lead bulb weight. It displaces {{convert|3774|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} and carries {{convert|1570|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} of lead ballast.
The boat has a draft of {{convert|7.00|ft|m|abbr=on}} with the keel extended. With it retracted the boat can be operated in shallow water or transported on a boat trailer.
The boat is normally fitted with a small {{convert|10|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} outboard motor for docking and maneuvering.
For sailing downwind the design may be equipped with an asymmetrical spinnaker of {{convert|1302|sqft|m2|abbr=on}}, a reaching gennaker of {{convert|774|sqft|m2|abbr=on}} or a light air reaching asymmetrical spinnaker (VMG) of {{convert|1113|sqft|m2|abbr=on}}.
The design has a hull speed of {{convert|7.15|kn|km/h|abbr=on}}.
Operational history
The boat is supported by an active class club that organizes racing events, the International Melges 32 Class Association.{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/association/melges-32-class-web-site|title= Melges 32 Class Web Site|access-date = 17 September 2022|last= McArthur| first = Bruce |work = sailboatdata.com|year = 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20220916235705/https://sailboatdata.com/association/melges-32-class-web-site|archive-date= 16 September 2022|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboat.guide/melges-32-class-web-site-class-association|title= Melges 32 Class Web Site|access-date= 17 September 2022|author= Sea Time Tech, LLC|work= sailboat.guide|year= 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20220916235751/https://sailboat.guide/melges-32-class-web-site-class-association|archive-date= 16 September 2022|url-status= live}}
