The M166 is a range of inline-four engines produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1997 to 2005, before it was succeeded by the M266 engine from 2004.

Design

The M166 is transversely mounted and features 2 valves per cylinder with multipoint injection.{{Cite web|url=http://australiancar.reviews/mercedesbenz_M166_M266.php|title=Mercedes-Benz M166 and M266 engines|website=australiancar.reviews|language=en|access-date=2018-07-06}} The engine is used in W168 A-Class models that feature the 'sandwich concept', where the engine is mounted at a 59-degree angle just behind the front axle.{{Cite news|url=https://www.autoevolution.com/news/how-mercedes-sandwich-concept-works-6058.html|title=How Mercedes' Sandwich Concept Works|last=Popa|first=Bogdan|date=2009-04-23|work=autoevolution|access-date=2018-07-06|language=en-us}} This allows for better weight distribution as well as increased safety, as the engine slides underneath the floorpan instead of into the cabin in the event of a head-on collision.{{Cite news|url=https://www.nbr.co.nz/article/mercedes-cuts-sandwich-b-class-still-tempts-appetite-116687|title=Mercedes cuts sandwich but B-class still tempts appetite|date=2012-04-14|work=The National Business Review|access-date=2018-07-06|language=en}}
