Metaxygnathus is an extinct genus of ichthyostegalian found in Late Devonian deposits of New South Wales, Australia.{{cite news |url=http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/s749716.htm |title=Four-legged fossil find in Asia rewrites history |publisher=ABC News |date=2002-12-19 |author=Danny Kingsley}}

It is known only from a lower jawbone. Previously thought to be a lobe-finned fish, it has now been reassigned to the earliest group of tetrapodomorphs.{{cite journal |last=Clack |first=J.A. |author2=Ahlberg, P.E. |author3=Blom, H. |author4= Finney, S.M. |year=2012 |title=A new genus of Devonian tetrapod from North-East Greenland, with new information on the lower jaw of Ichthyostega |journal=Palaeontology |volume=55 |issue=1 |pages=73–86 |doi=10.1111/j.1475-4983.2011.01117.x |doi-access=free |bibcode=2012Palgy..55...73C }}
